Driving in Aberdeen

Aberdeen's Low Emission Zone covers the city centre, Union Street included. Its final boundary, chosen after harbour access concerns were tested, leaves East North Street, Commerce Street and the Wapping Street gyratory outside it. A route skirting the centre therefore needs a street level check, rather than an assumption that every road near the harbour is restricted. The council says a non-compliant car can still use 10 of the 14 city centre car parks, among them Union Square, Trinity Centre, Virginia Street, Frederick Street and Denburn, while Chapel Street, Ship Row, Queen Street and Justice Mill Lane sit inside the zone. Leaving the Orkney and Shetland ferry terminal on Commercial Quay, turn left onto Market Street to stay out; turning right enters the zone within a very short distance.

There is no payment that makes a non-compliant vehicle lawful inside this Scottish zone, and the council offers no registration or prepayment. A petrol car generally needs Euro 4 and a diesel car Euro 6. The zone operates around the clock, all year. The page's zone checker explains the standards, exemptions and penalty sequence in detail. Here the practical decision is simpler: check the registration, read the mapped perimeter, and choose an outside route if the vehicle fails. A driver visiting from England cannot substitute an English clean air zone payment. Aberdeen's rule is a prohibition, enforced by cameras.

The local parking PCN is £100, discounted to £50 if paid within 14 days, and rises to £150 once a charge certificate is issued. Transport Scotland says Scottish councils could set parking penalties at up to £100 from 1 April 2023, when the old £60 ceiling was lifted. Aberdeen publishes one amount for every parking contravention, not the separate higher and lower bands familiar from some English councils. The comparison fields above therefore show the same local base amount. Read the code, photographs and location on the individual notice before deciding whether to pay or challenge.

You can challenge the notice through the council's parking portal. Enter the registration and notice number exactly as printed. A notice may take up to 24 hours to appear online after issue, so keep the original paper and its date. Give a factual account, attach a payment receipt or permit record if relevant, and explain why the alleged contravention did not happen. Do not pay while the appeal is open, because the council closes the case once a payment arrives. A belief that a quick stop was harmless is weaker than proof that a bay sign allowed it. If the council rejects formal representations, the independent Transport Appeals jurisdiction of the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland can consider the statutory grounds.

The council lists bus gates at Bedford Road, Bridge Street, Broad Street, College Bounds, Guild Street, Lang Stracht, Shielhill Avenue and Union Street, at two points on Market Street, and on two roads serving TECA and P&J Live. They operate 24 hours a day, and the vehicles allowed differ by gate: Broad Street admits only local timetabled buses and cycles, while Bridge Street, Guild Street, Market Street and Union Street also let goods vehicles through. Bus lanes show their hours on a sign before the lane starts, and a lane with no times shown, such as the eastbound lane on Auchmill Road and Great Northern Road, runs all day, every day. A navigation app can suggest a direct line through Broad Street without explaining a vehicle restriction, so look ahead for the blue bus gate sign before committing to the turn.

The bus lane charge rose from £60 to £100 for contraventions from 22 May 2024, after Transport Scotland and Scottish Ministers gave permission. It is £50 if paid within 14 days and £150 once a charge certificate is issued. A camera notice comes to the registered keeper. Review the contravention details through the council's portal, then compare the route and sign with the allegation, and appeal within 28 days of receiving the notice. If you were following an emergency diversion, retain the closure notice and any photographs that show the instruction. Simply saying a sat nav sent you through the gate will not establish that the restriction was suspended.

Kingswells, Bridge of Don and Craibstone are the three park and ride sites on the council's public transport page. Kingswells is on the A944 from Westhill, just before the Kingswells roundabout; Bridge of Don is reached from Ellon Road, the A90, by Parkway East and Exhibition Avenue; Craibstone, at Dyce, is off the northbound exit of the Craibstone roundabout. Choose by your direction of travel and the bus that serves your final stop. Their fares and operating patterns depend on the current service, so check the bus operator on the day.

City centre parking instead requires a bay by bay decision. The council offers PayByPhone and RingGo in all on-street bays and where signed in car parks. Both use location codes, which must match the sign beside your car. Neither service adds a convenience charge, so a session costs the same as the meter. You can also pay cash at a shop showing the PayPoint logo, quoting the six digit code on the meter. Set up the vehicle registration carefully, then confirm that the session began and covers your planned stay. The council says its meters have no QR payment codes; a sticker inviting you to scan one is a warning sign rather than an easier official option.

Aberdeen uses controlled parking zones with different streets and operating hours. Start with the council's zone map, then verify that your address and exact street appear in the permit scheme. A resident permit is permission to park according to that zone's rules, not a guaranteed space outside the house, and it does not cover yellow lines or loading bays. Prices from 1 April 2026 depend on the zone letter and on whether it is the first or second permit at the address. A year costs £231 in zones A, B, C, E, F and G, which allow one permit per property. A first permit costs £173 in zones H, J, K, L, M, N, P, T, V, W and X, and £115 in zones RR and Z.

A visitor arriving at your home cannot simply use your own car's fixed permit. Outside zones A to G, a household can hold a second, flexible permit, which can be switched online to a visitor's car, or a carer's or cleaner's, as often as needed. Virtual parking vouchers cost £6.05 each, up to 15 a year, and cover a full day's parking in pay by meter bays in your own zone; they are not offered in zones RR, Y, YY and Z. If your vehicle changes, update the permit record rather than assuming that an unchanged account covers the new plate. For a courtesy car, the council issues a temporary permit lasting up to 21 days. A permit can also be limited to particular bays, so read the sign even when the zone is familiar.

Aberdeen City Council's public chargers are leaving ChargePlace Scotland, which the Scottish Government decided to stop running from the end of 2025. In October 2025 the council signed a contract with EZO, alongside Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highland councils, and began moving its units in November, with the switch due to finish in spring 2026. EZO brings new prices, limits on how long you can stay and possible overstay charges, so open its current listing for the exact connector before travelling. Where parking charges apply, you pay them as well as the charging tariff. The council lists three rapid units at Kingswells park and ride and three at Craibstone, which may fit an edge of city stop better than circling the centre.

The DVSA active station dataset lists 31 authorised stations in the Aberdeen postcode districts used for this page. That is a district count, not a promise that every site tests every vehicle class. The table below separates the local districts from the whole AB postcode area and shows class flags. Use the official station list to confirm a particular garage's approval and contact details before booking. A van may need a different test class from a car, while a motorcycle needs a station authorised for its class.

A test centre's place in the list does not tell you its next appointment, repair availability or price. Ask those questions directly and establish how a retest will work if defects are found. Having a booked test does not, by itself, show that an LEZ exemption applies; check the scheme's own rules if the journey would enter its boundary.

A visitor coming from the north on the A90 might leave the car at Bridge of Don and take a bus towards the centre. That avoids choosing a city centre car park through an LEZ boundary they have not checked. Someone with a Euro 6 diesel who prefers to drive farther in should still inspect the exact entry street, bus gate signs and parking terms. Emissions compliance clears only the LEZ question. It does not authorise a turn through a camera controlled bus gate or an unpaid stop in a controlled bay.
