Driving in Edinburgh

Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone encloses the central streets rather than the whole city. The council traces its edge from Tollcross to Palmerston Place, along Queen Street to Picardy Place, around Abbeyhill and Holyrood Road, then by the Pleasance and the Meadows back to Tollcross. The boundary roads themselves are outside the restriction. That distinction matters for a driver who only needs to pass the centre on a through route, but the final turn into a hotel or car park may cross the line.

The Scottish zone sells no daily entry ticket for an older car, and the council says there is no way to pay in advance. Check the vehicle before deciding where to park. Motorcycles and mopeds are exempt. A Blue Badge holder in a non-compliant car may need to register an exemption before travelling, including when riding as a passenger.

Edinburgh began issuing penalty charge notices on 1 June 2024, and the zone runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A navigation app may not know your vehicle's emissions record or exemption status.

The council's published street tariff puts George Street, St Andrew Square, Charlotte Square, Queen Street, Market Street and St Giles Street at £9 an hour. The Old Town and some adjoining west end streets are £8 an hour. Palmerston Place, Tollcross, Fountainbridge and Heriot Row are listed at £6.80 an hour. Those prices make the exact street material: a car park entrance one block away can be in a different tariff area or have different operating conditions.

Central pay and display controls generally run from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and 12.30pm to 6.30pm Sunday. Other zones differ. Read the bay sign, maximum stay and RingGo location before paying. A published area tariff does not override a street restriction.

If a machine is out of service, check its instructions and the RingGo zone. Keep a payment record in case a ticket later alleges non-payment.

The council lists Ingliston and Hermiston to the west, Newcraighall and Wallyford to the east, Ferrytoll to the north, and Sheriffhall and Straiton to the south. Choose by the road you arrive on and the service that reaches your destination, rather than by the city's name alone. Ingliston is beside the A8 airport junction and has tram and bus connections. Its parking is free, but the public transport fare is separate.

Ingliston excludes motorhomes and overnight parking. The council points overnight users to Hermiston, which is open around the clock and allows a stay of up to three nights. Major Murrayfield events can fill Ingliston early. Straiton, near the A701 and A720 junction, has buses stopping on the main road outside its car park.

Edinburgh Trams lists a £2.40 adult city single and a £6 Adult City Day ticket. Its city zone covers every tram stop except Edinburgh Airport, so an airport trip is priced differently. Buy or activate the right ticket before boarding.

Edinburgh City Council lists a flat £100 parking ticket, reduced to £50 in its discount period. A charge certificate raises an unpaid parking ticket to £150. The council says the registered keeper receives a Notice to Owner if a ticket remains unpaid; that notice is the formal opportunity to make representations or pay the full amount. Missing the stated response window can leave fewer ways to contest the charge, so open keeper correspondence even if somebody else drove.

A bus lane or gate notice is £100, cut to £50 if paid within 14 days. Edinburgh's online challenge service needs the notice number and registration. You can view photographs or video a day later. The council accepts written challenges online, by post or in person, but not by email or telephone.

If formal representations fail, the Scottish Transport Appeals tribunal offers independent adjudication. Sheriff officers can recover unpaid parking debt after the charge certificate stage.

Edinburgh lists continuous bus lanes on Johnston Terrace, Bread Street, Inglis Green Road, Ocean Terminal and the A90 west of Barnton Junction. Gates include the Jewel, Prestonfield Avenue, Little France Drive, Kirklands Park Street, Bankhead Drive and westbound Links Place. A weekend journey can still be barred by a permanent gate.

The council says peak time lanes generally run from 7.30am to 9.30am and from 4pm to 6.30pm on weekdays. The times on the individual sign control the manoeuvre, and the permitted vehicle classes also vary. Private hire vehicles are not necessarily treated like licensed taxis. At the Shore, the directions have different restrictions: the northbound control is continuous, while the southbound lane has its own signed hours and vehicle list.

For an Old Town hotel, read the Johnston Terrace signs before following a route planner. If a notice is wrong, use the council's video to support a challenge.

Edinburgh residents apply online through NSL Apply. The council asks for proof that you live at the address and are the vehicle's main driver, with the V5C or other ownership evidence where appropriate. An application acknowledgement is not permission to park: the council says to wait until the permit is approved, paid and active on the account. Digital permits are checked by attendants against the registration. They also do not promise an empty bay outside your home.

Permit prices depend on the zone and vehicle. Edinburgh adds a £60 annual diesel surcharge to applications and renewals, or £35 on a six month permit and £17.50 on a three month one. Holders who had a permit when it began in May 2023 were spared it for three years if they renewed on time and kept the same car, but that exemption ended on 29 May 2026. Eligible Blue Badge holders receive a free resident permit without that addition. Update the online account before parking a replacement car in a permit bay.

Visitor permits are sold in books of ten. The central zone book costs £44.70, the peripheral book £30.30, extended zones £27.60 and priority parking areas £15.90. Blue Badge holders pay half and may buy twice as many books. A standard visitor permit allows 90 minutes in an eligible permit or shared-use bay; priority area rules cover the full controlled period. Scratch the date and time accurately and display the permit visibly. The council says unused single permits are not refundable, so residents should order only what they expect to use.

Edinburgh is moving council chargers from ChargePlace Scotland to WattStop, provided by Fuuse, during 2026. Most have moved, while the 50kW rapid units remain in transition, and the council says its tariffs did not change with the switch. Check each charger's network before arriving. WattStop takes its app, compatible roaming cards and QR code payment on migrated units.

The rapid chargers at Ingliston and Hermiston park and ride accept contactless payment. Those at Heriot Row, Fettes Avenue and East London Street take contactless or a ChargePlace Scotland account until they move. Check live status, displayed price and parking limit before depending on a unit for the return journey.

Edinburgh forbids a private charging cable across a public road or pavement, even with a cable cover or channel. A resident without off-street parking needs a public charging option.

The DVSA active-station list records 65 authorised stations across the Edinburgh postcode districts in the table. Confirm the vehicle class and appointment availability with the garage. A driver approaching from the west may prefer a site before reaching the LEZ.

Ask whether the garage tests your vehicle class and can repair a failure. A booked MOT does not exempt a non-compliant car from Edinburgh's LEZ or bus gates.
