Driving in Glasgow

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone covers the city centre between the M8 on its north and west sides, the Clyde to the south, and High Street and Saltmarket to the east. The council says the M8 itself is not part of the zone, which operates continuously, all year round. It is a restriction on entering the central streets, rather than a toll on every journey through Glasgow. A driver crossing the city should decide the route before reaching the motorway exits: a sat nav's shortest route may lead onto a street inside the boundary. Follow the signed route and the official boundary map when the vehicle's emissions standard is uncertain.

The zone applies to cars, vans and larger vehicles. Petrol vehicles normally need Euro 4 and diesels Euro 6, but registration year is only a guide to the actual certification. Motorcycles and mopeds are outside the scheme. The council began enforcing the general scheme in June 2023; the extra grace for vehicles registered inside the zone ended the following June. There is no Glasgow equivalent of paying a daily English clean air charge and then continuing into the restricted area. A first penalty is £60, halved if paid within 14 days, and each repeat entry by the same vehicle doubles it, up to £480 for a car or light van. The rate drops back to £60 only after 90 days without a breach.

SPT operates parking at Bridge Street, Shields Road and Kelvinbridge Subway stations. Its current combined ticket is £8.15 for all day parking and a return Subway journey. A parking add-on is £4.75 if you already use a Subway season ticket, ZoneCard or pay as you go travel. Parking alone for up to two hours is £3.20, while the all day parking-only price is £8.15. These are SPT car parks; rail station parking elsewhere around Glasgow is run separately.

Bridge Street suits a driver coming from the south who wants a short final journey into the centre. Kelvinbridge makes sense for a west end destination or an onward Subway trip. Shields Road has the largest of these SPT car parks and is the only one where overnight parking is permitted. Do not read that as permission to leave a vehicle overnight at the other two sites: SPT says those operate during Subway opening hours.

Collect a barrier ticket, then take it to the Subway ticket office for the combined deal. Parking-only customers can pay by card at the exit. Existing season ticket holders should ask for the parking add-on.

A Glasgow City Council parking PCN is £100, and the council accepts £50 as full payment if it arrives within 14 days of issue. If the notice is still unpaid 28 days after a Notice to Owner, or after a challenge is refused, the council can issue a charge certificate adding half the original charge, making £150. The council's 2023 enforcement report records the former £60 level and £30 discounted amount, so older articles may still show obsolete figures. Glasgow's payment portal asks for the vehicle registration and the PCN or bus lane notice number, and the record may take up to a day to appear online after issue.

Read the notice before paying. Check the location, date, registration, alleged code and the photographs. If signs were obscured or an applicable permit was active, collect the evidence while it is still available. Submit a challenge to the council through the route printed on your notice and retain its acknowledgement. The council says you cannot both pay and appeal the same notice. A rejection of formal representations can be taken to the Scottish Transport Appeals jurisdiction. The tribunal is independent of Glasgow City Council.

A street without yellow lines can still have parking restrictions. Scottish rules in force since 11 December 2023 ban parking on pavements, double parking and parking at crossing points. Glasgow began enforcing them on 26 February 2025, with the same £100 penalty.

Glasgow enforces bus lanes with cameras. A charge notice is £100, cut to £50 if paid within 14 days, and a charge certificate raises it to £150. While a lane is in operation, the council allows only buses, pedal cycles, taxis and licensed private hire cars in it. The exact hours depend on the sign at the lane or gate. Do not treat an empty bus lane as a general traffic lane merely because traffic is slow elsewhere. Watch for bus-only turns while approaching the central grid, particularly when a route planner redirects around congestion or roadworks.

Three camera sites, at George Square, Gorbals Street and Pollokshaws Road at Abbott Street, went live on 1 September 2024 to support the city's bus gates, a council report says. That means a memory of where cameras stood on a previous visit is unreliable. Read the signs as you approach, not after making the turn. If a notice arrives, use the vehicle video or images offered through the council portal to identify the manoeuvre. Representations should reach the council within 28 days of the notice being served. For a genuine dispute, explain precisely what the sign showed and why the vehicle was permitted or the allegation is mistaken.

A compliant electric car still cannot pass a restricted bus gate. LEZ compliance and bus access are separate checks.

Glasgow has controlled zones in the centre and beyond it, including west end streets where residents share some bays with paying visitors. Since 19 August 2025 the resident permit price has depended on the car's CO2 emissions and on how many permits the address already holds, and the same table applies in every zone. Until then, a city centre permit cost £328 a year and most other zones charged £98. Check the zone map for your street before applying.

A resident's permit is virtual and valid in shared use bays within the zone named on it. It is not a guaranteed space or a guest's car. Once approved it lasts 12 months, and you can pay for three months or a full year at a time. Where the council offers them, residents' visitor permits cost £5 for six hours under its 2026/27 charges. Before moving, check your address's permit area and the council's evidence requirements.

The council points residents to GOV.UK's CO2 and vehicle tax tools to find the figure for their car. A second permit at the same address costs £125 a year more than the first in every band.

Glasgow City Council's public chargers are ChargePlace Scotland units in council car parks and on street, its 2024 tariff review says. The council's 2026/27 charges set 40p per kWh at standard units and 70p per kWh at rapid units, plus a £1 connection fee for each session. A £40 overstay charge applies once the maximum stay passes: 90 minutes at a rapid unit, two hours on street in the city centre and three hours on street elsewhere, both between 8am and 8pm, and 12 hours in an off-street car park. Any parking fee at the location applies as well. Check availability on the unit's screen or in the app before plugging in.

Private Glasgow chargers can use different payments and parking rules. Check the socket, bay restrictions and any car park fee. For a fault, record the unit identifier and contact the network named on the equipment.

If a charging bay is occupied, do not stop on yellow lines while waiting for it. Set a fallback charger before a long journey. At home, the council does not allow a charging cable to be laid across the pavement, even in a cable gully.

The DVSA active-station data used by this site lists 33 authorised stations in the Glasgow postcode districts shown below. This is a district-based count, not a promise that every site tests every vehicle class or can take an appointment today. A Glasgow address may be closer to a station in a neighbouring district or authority, so search by the vehicle's needs as well as the city name.

Ask whether the site tests your class of vehicle before booking. A car, motorcycle and larger van may need different MOT classes; the table makes that distinction visible. Book early enough to leave time for repairs if the vehicle fails. If the MOT has already expired, check the rules on driving to a pre-booked test and do not treat a general garage visit as permission for other journeys.

A centre outside the LEZ may suit a non-compliant car. An MOT booking does not override the zone restriction. Confirm the station address and route before setting off.
