What every page on this site does

  • Puts the answer in the first screen, as a figure, a verdict or a table, rather than after four paragraphs of preamble.
  • Keeps every statutory figure beside the publication it came from, with the date it was read.
  • Says when something is not published instead of estimating around the gap.
  • Shows the assumptions a calculator made, so you can see which one does not describe you.

Where a page cannot answer a question honestly it says so and names what is missing. That is the whole editorial rule, and it is the reason several fields on this site are permanently empty.

About the site

Common questions

Do any of these need my registration number?
No. Not one of them asks for a registration, and the plate decoder reads a mark in your browser without sending it anywhere. Every answer on this site is computed from figures you can see rather than looked up against a record about you.
Where do the figures come from?
GOV.UK, HMRC, DVLA, DVSA, the Sentencing Council, legislation.gov.uk, EUR-Lex, DESNZ and Ofgem, each named on the page that uses it with the date it was read. Where nothing is published, the page says so rather than estimating.
How often are the rates updated?
Vehicle excise duty moves on 1 April, company car percentages on 6 April, fuel prices weekly and the energy price cap quarterly. Each page carries a checked on date, and a page with an old date has not been re-read rather than being wrong.
