Driving in Dundee

Dundee's Low Emission Zone covers the city centre within the A991 Inner Ring Road. The council says Bell Street, West Marketgait NCP and Wellgate car parks are excluded. That exception makes the approach route important: a car park can be outside the restriction even though it appears in a city centre search. Check the council's detailed map before choosing the entrance. Do not infer permission from a postcode or a nearby landmark: the council's road list puts only part of some streets inside, such as Nethergate between West Marketgait and Crichton Street, Seagate between Commercial Street and East Marketgait, and Bell Street between Victoria Road and Constitution Road. Enforcement began on 30 May 2024, and the zone runs 24 hours a day, all year.

Dundee does not have a single citywide street tariff. Inside the A991, the council lists £3 for up to half an hour and £4 for up to an hour on streets including Bank Street, Bell Street, Reform Street and parts of Nethergate. Outside the inner ring on selected central streets, the corresponding amounts are £2.80 and £3.70. Perth Road, Hilltown and the listed western part of Nethergate use longer tariff periods, with £4.20 for up to two hours and £5.80 for up to four. The border between tariff groups can cross a familiar road name, so read the meter where you stop. Street charges apply from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 1pm to 6pm on Sunday.

Bell Street Hub, Olympia, Gellatly Street and Greenmarket appear in the council's multi-storey tariff table. On weekdays, the listed charge at each is £4.20 for up to three hours and £11 for a stay of six to twelve hours. Bell Street Hub and Olympia have a separate £4 weekend day rate. Do not apply that weekend price to Gellatly Street or Greenmarket, which use the ordinary band table through the week. The difference matters if a Saturday visit is long enough that a street bay would require several payments. Gellatly Street appears in full on the council's list of roads inside the Low Emission Zone, so check the zone map before taking an older car there.

Start by reviewing the ticket and the bay. Check the contravention description, road markings, car registration and payment evidence. Submit the challenge through Dundee's portal with a concise explanation and attachments. If the informal challenge is refused, the council says it offers a further discount period; read the actual rejection date. To continue formally, wait for the Notice to Owner, Keeper or Hirer and make representations in the way it specifies. A further rejection can go to the independent Scottish Transport Appeals tribunal, within 28 days of the Notice of Rejection.

The later letters are not reminders to set aside. The council says it sends a Notice to Owner when neither payment nor appeal is received after twenty-eight days. After fifty-six days without action, a charge certificate raises the amount to £150 and the ordinary appeal option has ended. Save the portal's confirmation screen and any evidence sent. If a hired car is involved, tell the hire company promptly because keeper liability and the hirer's agreement can affect who responds.

The Scottish Transport Appeals tribunal lists councils that issue civil bus lane charge notices. Dundee is not on its list; Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow are. Dundee's LEZ assessment also says the city did not operate bus lane camera enforcement when that document was written. Do not confuse a Dundee LEZ camera PCN with a bus gate notice. The former concerns emissions and entry into the mapped centre, while a parking ticket concerns where a vehicle stopped. Each notice has its own evidence and route for appeal.

Dundee has resident schemes in the city centre, Broughty Ferry and Menzieshill. The council's current annual prices are £160 for the city centre, £105 for Broughty Ferry and £30 for Menzieshill. Eligibility follows specific streets and controlled parking orders rather than a broad neighbourhood name. Check the council's qualifying street list before applying. The centre is divided into north, east and west areas, and a permit allows parking within the relevant allocated zone rather than anywhere in the city. The council also warns that a permit holder cannot park a non-compliant car inside the Low Emission Zone, and that doing so risks the permit being revoked.

Dundee City Council publishes a September 2026 tariff for council owned chargers operated by Evolt. Its fast chargers cost 55p per kWh, rapid units 67p and ultra rapid units 69p. Those are network prices, not universal Dundee electricity rates. Urban Fox units continue on a different tariff, with 50p per kWh and a 38p connection fee on the council's information page. Check the name on the actual unit before starting a session. A charger shown in an app may be privately operated and have its own terms.

Dundee's council documents describe a Riverside park and ride proposal near Wright Avenue, but its planning application was refused. The council's parking pages instead list city car parks and street tariffs. Do not drive to a proposed Riverside facility expecting a staffed car park or a bus fare. A visitor seeking to leave a non-compliant vehicle outside the Low Emission Zone should choose an actual lawful parking location, then plan the onward bus or walk separately. Check any maximum stay and payment rules at that site.

The DVSA active station list contains 67 approved sites in the Dundee postcode districts used here. The number differs from the whole DD postcode area, which extends beyond the city. The table also separates the class flags for local stations. If you have a motorcycle, large van or another vehicle outside an ordinary car class, check that a particular station holds the relevant authorisation before making an appointment. A garage name appearing in search results does not prove it currently tests your class.

A visitor crossing the Tay Road Bridge towards the V&A should first decide whether the vehicle is eligible for Dundee's LEZ. If it is not, the council map shows excluded car park options, but the final approach matters. A compliant car can choose a central facility more freely, yet still needs to obey the street signs and parking terms. For a short visit, the on-street tariff can be compared with a multi-storey rate. For a longer visit, look at the car park's full band and vehicle height before committing to a route.
