Plate age

The 75 plate

A 75 plate is a Great Britain age identifier issued by DVLA from 1 September 2025 to 28 February 2026. It dates the registration mark, so a transferred private plate does not prove when the vehicle was first registered. The tax and emissions results below are derived from that period using the 2026/27 tax rates.

What does a 75 number plate mean?

It is the age identifier for September 2025 to February 2026. Autumn series identifiers are the year plus 50, so 75 is 2025 plus 50 and covers September 2025 to February 2026.

The scheme changes twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September, which is why British new car sales have two enormous months and ten quiet ones.

Issuing regions for this age identifier

The age identifier says nothing about where the car came from. That is the memory tag, the two letters in front of it, and all 19 regions were issuing marks in this period.

What period does a 75 registration actually describe?

A 75 identifier was released on 1 September 2025 and remained current until 28 February 2026. The winter end explains why a car registered in February 2026 may still wear a 75 mark. The digits describe the age series of a registration, not its assembly date. An imported, stored or delayed-delivery car needs its own document check. The first registration entry on the V5C is the starting point for tax and MOT decisions.

The September launch was substantial: SMMT reported 312,891 new car registrations, including 72,779 battery electric cars. Its published battery electric share was 23.3%. Those figures are a snapshot of the market in the first month, not a guide to the fuel type of every 75 plate. An advert for a used 75 vehicle needs the actual engine or electric specification, mileage and history; the age code supplies none of them.

In 2026, a car first registered in January or February gets 75, the autumn code from the year before. From 1 March it gets 26, and from 1 September it gets 76, which runs from September 2026 to February 2027.Age identifiers issued during 2026Last autumnSpring codeAutumn code752676JFMAMJJASOND1 March1 September75 covers September 2025 to February 2026

How was a 75 plate car taxed at registration?

All first registrations under 75 fell in the 2025 to 2026 tax year. For a new car, the first licence was tied to certified CO2. A zero emission car incurred £10 for its first year, while a petrol car in the 131 to 150 g/km band incurred £540. A non-RDE2 diesel could move to the next first-year band, so a petrol table must not be applied blindly to a diesel. The initial payment covered only the first licence.

After that first licence, the current annual single-payment standard rate is £200 for cars in this system. A petrol, diesel or hybrid 75 plate can also carry the £440 annual expensive car supplement if its original published list price was more than £40,000. It runs for five years starting with the second licence. The first licence covers 12 months, so a 75 plate kept by its first owner reaches that second licence between September 2026 and February 2027, and the earliest are reaching it now. A used price under £40,000 cannot cancel it, because the tax test looks back to the list price before first registration and before discounts.

A zero emission 75 plate is subject to the later electric price threshold instead. For licences taking effect from 1 April 2026, the supplement applies to an electric car from this window only if its original list price was more than £50,000. That change covers cars first registered from 1 April 2025, including all 75 plates, even though the £40,000 line was still the law on each of their registration days. HMRC's policy paper adds that a second licence taking effect before 1 April 2026 still carries one year of the charge. The standard annual rate remains payable below the threshold. The car table is not a quote for a van or motorcycle.

Selected 75 plate first-year rates beside current later licences
Car descriptionFirst licence in 2025 to 2026Current annual standard
Zero emission£10£200
Petrol, 111 to 130 g/km£440£200
Petrol, 131 to 150 g/km£540£200

The standard amount excludes an expensive car supplement. Higher first-year diesel treatment may apply without RDE2.

Example

A 75 plate electric car above the supplement threshold

First registration
September 2025
Published original list price
More than £50,000
Current later-licence components
£200 and £440
  1. The registration occurred after the April 2025 start of the electric expensive car rules.
  2. Its original list price crosses the £50,000 threshold now used for a later licence.
  3. During the supplement run, add the current extra £440 to the £200 standard rate.

For a first keeper, the second licence starts in September 2026 and costs £640 at current rates while the supplement applies.

When does a 75 plate car have its first MOT?

In Great Britain, calculate the normal first MOT by adding three years to the vehicle's actual first registration date. For the 75 window that produces dates from September 2028 through February 2029. The February end crosses a year boundary, just as the plate release did. If a buyer plans to keep a late-75 vehicle for several years, the test cost and any repairs begin sooner or later according to that specific day, not according to the broad label on an advert.

Northern Ireland usually first tests private cars and motorcycles when they reach four years. A 75 car under that scheme will ordinarily first fall due from September 2029 to February 2030. A light goods vehicle follows a different NI age rule. Confirm the vehicle category before copying a car deadline to a van, and use the appropriate official test booking system if the vehicle changes jurisdiction.

A 75 plate bought well before its first due date can properly have no MOT record. This is no reason to skip a physical inspection or a service-history check. If an early MOT has already been carried out, inspect its result and renewal date. GOV.UK says a pass more than a month (minus a day) before the due date moves the next renewal to one year, minus a day, from that pass. The recorded certificate wins over an estimate made only from the plate.

How do you avoid a 75 plate tax surprise at handover?

First ask the seller for the registration date and the original published list price, including factory equipment. Look at the V5C to confirm the VIN, fuel classification and emissions entry. For a petrol or hybrid example above £40,000 new, request a DVLA tax quote that includes any supplement. For an electric example, compare its original list price with the current £50,000 threshold. A claimed electric exemption based on the former owner's purchase discount is not enough.

The seller's tax licence cannot be used by the buyer. Use the green new keeper slip to tax the vehicle before taking it onto the road. If collection is by transporter and the car will stay off the road, a SORN is the alternative. Check insurance and finance details against the current DVLA mark. A private registration being removed can leave an advert and a V5C temporarily showing different characters, so have the seller complete the change and show the updated record.

  1. Check the first registration day and tax class on the V5C.
  2. Find the original list price where the expensive car supplement may apply.
  3. Request the current DVLA tax amount and compare it with the seller's claim.
  4. Take the keeper slip, arrange your licence and then drive the car away.

Can a 75 plate go on a 2025 spring car?

A car first registered under the spring 25 series predates September 2025. Giving it a 75 age identifier would make it appear newer, which DVLA prohibits. This holds even if both cars are commonly called 2025 models. The exact first registration date, rather than the model year chosen by a manufacturer, governs whether the assignment is allowed. A later registered car can be considered for an older mark under DVLA's ordinary conditions.

If you purchase a personalised 75 registration separately, keep the V750 or V778 and complete the official assignment before displaying it. If it is already on a vehicle you are selling, arrange retention before handover if you intend to keep it. Once the car's mark changes, tell your insurer and update Congestion Charge, Dart Charge or clean air zone accounts that bill by registration. The number printed on the car should always agree with the registration held by DVLA.

Common questions

What year is a 75 plate?
A 75 registration was issued September 2025 to February 2026, so the car behind it was first registered between 1 September 2025 and 28 February 2026. Most people call it a 2025 car.
How is a 75 plate car taxed?
First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate. That means £200 a year from the second licence, whatever it emits, plus the expensive car supplement if it listed above the threshold.
Is a 75 plate diesel ULEZ compliant?
No Euro figure is recorded, so we have read it from the first registration date of 1 September 2025. New cars had to meet Euro 6 from 1 September 2015. Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) asks Euro 6 of a diesel car, so there is nothing to pay.
Does the 75 tell me anything about the car itself?
No. The identifier records when the mark was issued and nothing else. A private plate transferred onto an older car hides its age entirely, which is exactly what many of them are bought to do.
Is a 75 plate newer than a 25 plate?
The 75 series began in September 2025, after the 25 series ended in August. Its last issue month was February 2026, so it spans two calendar years. The age identifier describes when the mark became available; a private transfer can obscure the vehicle's original mark. To compare actual vehicles, read their first registration dates and check mileage, specification and condition. A manufacturer's model year is a separate label.
What was the first-year tax on a 75 plate electric car?
A zero emission car first registered under 75 fell in the 2025 to 2026 first-year schedule and paid £10 for that initial licence. Its next current annual car licence uses the £200 standard rate. An expensive car supplement can add £440 annually during the defined later years if the published new list price exceeded £50,000. The later threshold applies to this whole plate window for licences effective from April 2026.
Does a £50,000 75 plate EV pay the supplement?
On a later licence beginning from 1 April 2026, a genuinely zero emission car listed new at exactly £50,000 does not cross the current electric threshold of more than £50,000. It pays the standard car rate instead. The published list price, including relevant factory specification, is the comparison figure, not a used asking price. Confirm the original price and ask DVLA for the actual tax quote if a dealer's figure differs.
Why is my 75 plate petrol car quoted at £640 tax?
The current £200 annual car standard rate plus the £440 expensive car supplement equals £640 as a single annual payment. A petrol 75 plate qualifies for that extra charge when its original pre-discount list price exceeded £40,000 and the licence is within the supplement's five-year period starting with the second licence. A current value below the threshold makes no difference. Ask for the original list price and confirm the charge through DVLA.
When will a February 2026 75 plate need its first MOT?
The normal Great Britain deadline falls on the third anniversary of its actual February 2026 first registration date, giving February 2029. A September 2025 example reaches its deadline several months earlier, despite sharing 75. Northern Ireland usually first tests private cars after four years, which would put a February 2026 car in February 2030. Check the official status and the vehicle category, especially if it is a van or has moved jurisdiction.
Can I assign 75 to a car registered in March 2025?
No. March 2025 is earlier than the September start of the 75 age series. DVLA will not allow a registration transfer that presents that car as younger than it is. A V750 or V778 proves an entitlement to a mark; it does not override the age restriction for the receiving vehicle. Keep the mark unassigned until you have a suitable later car and wait for DVLA's record to change before fitting plates.
