Plate age
The 26 plate

What does a 26 number plate mean?
It is the age identifier for March to August 2026. Spring series identifiers use the year itself, so 26 covers March to August 2026.
The scheme changes twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September, which is why British new car sales have two enormous months and ten quiet ones.
Vehicle tax rules for this registration period
| Tax system | First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate |
| Standard rate, 2026/27 | £200 |
| Expensive car supplement | £440 a year for 5 years, if the list price was above the threshold |

Emissions standard and clean air zones
| Fuel | Euro standard | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Euro 6 | The Euro status entry at V.9 of the V5C settles it, as do the DVLA vehicle enquiry service and the certificate of conformity. Some manufacturers certified early. |
| Diesel | Euro 6 | The pass mark for a diesel in every UK zone is Euro 6. |

Issuing regions for this age identifier
The age identifier says nothing about where the car came from. That is the memory tag, the two letters in front of it, and all 19 regions were issuing marks in this period.
The region table lists the issuing offices behind each letter.

Why are March and April 26 plate cars different?
The spring 26 age identifier covers 1 March through 31 August 2026, but the first day of April changed the vehicle tax year. The first registration date, not the date you ordered or collected the car, decides which first-year schedule was charged. A March 26 plate and an April 26 plate can therefore display identical age digits while their original tax invoices differ. Their current and future annual licences need a separate calculation.
SMMT recorded 380,627 UK new car registrations in March 2026. Its battery electric count was 86,120, or 22.6% of the monthly market. This describes the crowded plate launch month before the April rate change. It cannot tell you whether a particular car is electric or which first-year band applies. The V5C's first registration date and CO2 field remain the useful facts for an individual vehicle.
How did first-year car tax change during the 26 release?
A March 2026 new car used the 2025 to 2026 first-year CO2 table. Registrations from April to August used the 2026 to 2027 table. For a petrol or RDE2-compliant diesel emitting 131 to 150 g/km, the first-year amount rose from £540 to £560 at the boundary. For 151 to 170 g/km it rose from £1,360 to £1,410. A zero emission car remained at £10 for its first licence in both parts. The comparison is historical for a car already registered.
Non-RDE2 diesel cars can be charged at a higher first-year band, so an advertised petrol figure does not settle a diesel invoice. Ask for certified CO2 and the manufacturer's RDE2 status if that is the question. After the first licence, a normal 26 plate car moves to the standard rate, £200 a year at today's figures. The first-year CO2 amount is not an annual band that follows it for life. A buyer taking over a used 26 plate must obtain a new licence; the original keeper's tax never transfers.
A car listed new above £40,000 may attract the expensive car supplement, £440 at today's rate, added to the standard rate for five years from the second licence. For a zero emission 26 car, the relevant list-price threshold on licences from April 2026 is instead more than £50,000. This applies to March as well as April registrations: both occurred after 1 April 2025, and the threshold concerns later licences taking effect from April 2026. The April 2026 boundary within 26 changes first-year bands, not the eligibility date for the electric threshold.
| Car and CO2 | March 2026 first licence | April to August 2026 first licence |
|---|---|---|
| Zero emission | £10 | £10 |
| Petrol, 131 to 150 g/km | £540 | £560 |
| Petrol, 151 to 170 g/km | £1,360 | £1,410 |
Only the initial licence uses these first-year values. A non-RDE2 diesel may move to the next band.
Example
A 150 g/km petrol ordered in March and registered in April
- Certified emissions
- 150 g/km
- Order month
- March 2026
- First registration
- April 2026
- The registration falls inside the later half of the 26 plate tax split.
- At 150 g/km the petrol car belongs to the 131 to 150 first-year band.
- The first licence therefore uses the April rate, not the March figure quoted when ordered.
Its first-year car tax was £560 rather than £540. A later annual licence is £200 at today's standard rate, before any supplement.
When is the first MOT for a 26 plate car?
The normal Great Britain first MOT deadline is the third anniversary of first registration. A March 2026 car first needs one in March 2029; an August 2026 registration reaches that point in August 2029. The exact day comes from the vehicle record. The shift in vehicle tax on 1 April has no effect on its MOT date. Book an approved centre near the deadline and check the official MOT status if another keeper has already tested the vehicle early.
Northern Ireland generally first tests private cars and motorcycles at four years, placing a 26 car between March and August 2030. A light goods vehicle there has an earlier first test, so a 26 van must not be treated as a private car. A move between GB and NI needs care with the current local rules and record. Until that first test, a 26 plate car must still meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness, which GOV.UK says apply at all times.
What should a buyer verify on a 26 plate invoice?
For a car first registered in March, compare the first-year line with the 2025 to 2026 table. For one registered from April, use the next tax year's schedule. The V5C records the emissions figure; an order form alone might show a planned registration date that slipped. Ask whether options fitted before first registration took the price beyond the expensive car threshold, since they count towards it. The amount paid after a promotional discount is not the threshold figure.
For a zero emission 26 car, confirm the £10 first-year licence and whether its original published list price exceeded £50,000. For a petrol or hybrid car, the comparable expensive car line remains £40,000. A dealer who quotes the £200 standard renewal should explain any additional £440 during the relevant later years. If the quote and DVLA's vehicle tax service differ, resolve the discrepancy before you sign rather than assuming the lesser amount will prevail.
After a used purchase, take the new keeper slip and obtain your own tax licence before driving. Check the registration, VIN and tax class against the V5C and insurance documents. If the seller intends to retain a personal mark, let DVLA complete its removal before collecting a car on newly issued plates. Keep the invoice showing first registration and specification, since it can help explain which side of the April split this car occupies later.
- Identify the first registration day and use its side of the April tax change.
- Compare CO2, fuel and list price with the relevant official rate tables.
- Check the VIN, keeper paperwork and any private mark arrangement.
- Tax and insure the vehicle under its assigned mark before road use.
Can a 26 mark be assigned to a 75 plate car?
A car genuinely first registered in the 75 window predates March 2026. Assigning a 26 age mark would make it look newer, which DVLA does not allow. A car first registered from 1 March 2026 onwards could qualify to receive it. Manufacturer model years, delivery delays and an owner holding a V750 or V778 do not override the receiving vehicle's first registration date.
Where a 26 number is being bought separately, complete the DVLA assignment before fitting plates. If the original mark is being removed from a car offered for sale, confirm the replacement mark and update insurance and any accounts that identify vehicles by registration. A photograph of a plate shows what was displayed at that moment, but the DVLA vehicle record and V5C establish the registration currently assigned and the car's actual age.
Common questions
- What year is a 26 plate?
- A 26 registration was issued March to August 2026, so the car behind it was first registered between 1 March 2026 and 31 August 2026. Most people call it a 2026 car.
- How is a 26 plate car taxed?
- First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate. That means £200 a year from the second licence, whatever it emits, plus the expensive car supplement if it listed above the threshold.
- Is a 26 plate diesel ULEZ compliant?
- No Euro figure is recorded, so we have read it from the first registration date of 1 March 2026. New cars had to meet Euro 6 from 1 September 2015. Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) asks Euro 6 of a diesel car, so there is nothing to pay.
- Does the 26 tell me anything about the car itself?
- No. The identifier records when the mark was issued and nothing else. A private plate transferred onto an older car hides its age entirely, which is exactly what many of them are bought to do.
- Does a March 26 plate use the April 2026 first-year rates?
- No. A vehicle first registered in March 2026 took its first licence under the 2025 to 2026 schedule. The April 2026 first-year rates apply to vehicles first registered from that date, even though the 26 mark itself began a month earlier. For a petrol car in the 131 to 150 g/km band, that means £540 in March and £560 from April. Verify the registration day on the V5C rather than relying on an order date.
- Are March and April 26 plate EVs treated differently for the luxury supplement?
- Both registration months are after 1 April 2025. For a later licence effective from April 2026, a zero emission car from either part of the 26 release faces the supplement only where its original published list price was more than £50,000. The £10 first-year electric rate also applies to both months. Other CO2 first-year bands changed in April, so the absence of an electric difference should not be extended to petrol cars.
- What is the current annual tax on a 26 plate petrol car?
- A subsequent single annual licence uses the £200 standard car rate. If the published list price before its first registration exceeded £40,000, an extra £440 applies during the expensive car supplement period beginning with the second licence. That makes £640 for a current full annual single payment during that period. Its original first-year CO2 rate is a separate charge already incurred when the car was new.
- Can I tell the exact age of a 26 plate from its digits?
- Only to the March to August 2026 release window for an ordinary original registration. The digits do not reveal the day, which is needed for tax-year and MOT checks, or the build date. A personalised mark could also have been assigned to an eligible newer vehicle. Use the V5C or official vehicle enquiry to determine when the car itself was first registered, and verify its VIN against the vehicle.
- When will a 26 plate need its first GB MOT?
- Normally on the third anniversary of first registration, so the 26 cohort falls between March and August 2029. A car first registered on a specific April day becomes due on the corresponding April day, not at the end of the plate window. Confirm its status online and book in advance. Northern Ireland's ordinary first test for a private car is four years after registration; vans can differ.
- Can I put my 26 private registration on a 2025 car?
- A 2025 first registration predates the 26 series, so a 26 age mark would make that car appear younger. DVLA will refuse the assignment. You may hold the entitlement or retention document while selecting a suitable vehicle registered later. Once DVLA accepts a transfer, fit the correct physical plates and tell your insurer. Ownership of the plate right by itself does not change the age of the car receiving it.
