Plate age

The 25 plate

A 25 plate is a Great Britain age identifier issued by DVLA from 1 March 2025 to 31 August 2025. It dates the registration mark, so a transferred private plate does not prove when the vehicle was first registered. The tax and emissions results below are derived from that period using the 2026/27 tax rates.

What does a 25 number plate mean?

It is the age identifier for March to August 2025. Spring series identifiers use the year itself, so 25 covers March to August 2025.

The scheme changes twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September, which is why British new car sales have two enormous months and ten quiet ones.

Issuing regions for this age identifier

The age identifier says nothing about where the car came from. That is the memory tag, the two letters in front of it, and all 19 regions were issuing marks in this period.

Why does the registration day matter on a 25 plate?

The 25 identifier was released for 1 March to 31 August 2025. Within that single mark, 1 April was a major vehicle tax boundary. A March registration entered the older first-year schedule and a car registered from April entered the new one. For an electric car, a March date also means exemption from the expensive car supplement, while April onwards means the later price-based test. The digits 25 cannot answer which side the vehicle occupies. Ask for its actual first registration day.

SMMT reported 357,103 new car registrations in March 2025. Battery electric registrations reached 69,313, representing 19.4% of that month's market. Those figures describe the launch surge, including cars registered before April's tax change. They do not imply that every 25 plate EV is taxed alike. A vehicle ordered in March but first registered in April falls under the later rules, whatever deposit date appears on the sales contract.

In 2026, a car first registered in January or February gets 75, the autumn code from the year before. From 1 March it gets 26, and from 1 September it gets 76, which runs from September 2026 to February 2027.Age identifiers issued during 2026Last autumnSpring codeAutumn code752676JFMAMJJASOND1 March1 September75 covers September 2025 to February 2026

What changed for 25 plate tax on 1 April 2025?

First-year car rates are charged when the vehicle is initially registered, based on its certified CO2. For a petrol car in the 131 to 150 g/km band, the rate was £270 during March and £540 from April. A zero emission car moved from a £0 first licence to £10. A diesel without RDE2 may have faced the higher first-year band under the published rules. These were one-off first licences, so a used buyer should not treat the historical receipt as their renewal charge.

The current standard annual car rate is £200 from a later licence, including for both March and April 25 plate electric cars. A petrol, diesel or hybrid car whose list price exceeded £40,000 can incur the current £440 expensive car supplement in the second to sixth years after first registration, which for a 25 plate began between March and August 2026. For a zero emission car, the key is its original registration date. One first registered in March 2025 remains exempt from the supplement. A car registered from April 2025 can incur it if the original list price exceeded £50,000 under the threshold applying to licences from April 2026.

The electric £50,000 threshold is retrospective for qualifying zero emission cars first registered from 1 April 2025. A 25 plate EV listed above £40,000 but no more than £50,000 is therefore not charged the supplement on a later licence taking effect from April 2026. HMRC notes one exception: a car whose second licence took effect before 1 April 2026 pays one year of the charge. It is the published list price before discount that counts. Do not rely on an invoice discounted below the threshold, and do not apply this electric threshold to a petrol or hybrid car.

Two first-year regimes inside the 25 plate release
Car and emissionsRegistered in March 2025Registered April to August 2025
Zero emission, first licence£0£10
Petrol, 131 to 150 g/km£270£540
Petrol, 151 to 170 g/km£680£1,360

These are original first-year charges, not current renewal amounts. RDE2 treatment can change a diesel figure.

Example

Two £50,000 electric cars registered either side of April

Car A
25 plate, registered March 2025
Car B
25 plate, registered April 2025
Original published list price
£50,000 each
  1. Car A had a £0 first licence and is excluded from the expensive car supplement by its pre-April registration.
  2. Car B had a £10 first licence; the current zero emission threshold is more than £50,000, so a price exactly at £50,000 does not trigger the supplement.
  3. Both have the £200 standard annual rate on their later current licences.

Their present base tax matches, but the original first-year treatment and legal reason for avoiding the supplement differ.

When is a 25 plate due its first MOT?

For an ordinary car in Great Britain, the first MOT falls on the third anniversary of its first registration. A genuine 25 plate car first registered from March through August 2025 therefore reaches that date from March through August 2028. The April tax divide does not change the test rule. A March car and an August car have different individual deadlines, even though both display 25. Use the government's MOT status check and the exact registration day to book ahead.

A private car kept under the Northern Ireland scheme normally first tests after four years, putting this cohort in March to August 2029. A Northern Ireland light goods vehicle is due earlier than a private car, so do not take the four-year figure across to a van. Car buyers moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland should check the current testing record and booking arrangement rather than rely on a seller's informal estimate.

How can you check the right 25 plate tax before buying?

Find the first registration date on the V5C rather than guessing from 25. Then identify the tax class and fuel, inspect the certified CO2 entry for a historical first-year comparison, and ask for the new list price if an expensive car supplement is possible. For a later annual figure, DVLA's vehicle enquiry service shows the car's current tax rates once given the reference number from its V5C. The buyer's own tax starts afresh: the seller's remaining licence does not transfer with the vehicle.

For an April to August zero emission car, the published list price matters even when the asking price has fallen sharply. A £50,000 price does not cross the published 'more than £50,000' threshold; a price above it can. Options fitted when the car was first registered count towards that price in law, so obtain the specification or ask the supplying dealer if the tax record is surprising. For March EVs, the pre-change registration date gives the exemption instead. This is the most useful distinction a 25 plate page can make.

At collection, take the green new keeper slip and tax the car before driving it. If it is being kept off the road, make a SORN instead. Arrange insurance against the registration DVLA currently assigns; a seller keeping a private mark has to take it off, and hold the new log book, before selling. Check the VIN against the document before paying and preserve copies of the advert where a dealer has quoted a particular tax cost.

  1. Confirm whether the first registration occurred in March or from April onward.
  2. Obtain a DVLA tax quote for the exact vehicle and investigate any supplement.
  3. Compare the V5C VIN and registration with the car and insurance schedule.
  4. Use the new keeper slip for your tax licence before leaving by road.

Can a 25 age mark hide an older vehicle?

It should not. DVLA refuses an assignment that would make a vehicle appear newer than its true age. A car first registered before March 2025 cannot legally take a 25 age identifier, even if the owner bought the mark separately. A newer car may carry an older eligible mark, so seeing 25 still does not prove that the underlying vehicle was first registered within this particular window. The V5C gives the date you need.

A seller keeping a personalised 25 mark should transfer or retain it before sale and explain which registration the car will wear when handed over. Ask for the V750 or V778 where the transaction includes an entitlement rather than an already assigned mark. Update insurance and registration-based payment accounts after DVLA processes any change. Fit the physical plates only once the vehicle record shows that the mark is assigned.

Common questions

What year is a 25 plate?
A 25 registration was issued March to August 2025, so the car behind it was first registered between 1 March 2025 and 31 August 2025. Most people call it a 2025 car.
How is a 25 plate car taxed?
First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate. That means £200 a year from the second licence, whatever it emits, plus the expensive car supplement if it listed above the threshold.
Is a 25 plate diesel ULEZ compliant?
No Euro figure is recorded, so we have read it from the first registration date of 1 March 2025. New cars had to meet Euro 6 from 1 September 2015. Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) asks Euro 6 of a diesel car, so there is nothing to pay.
Does the 25 tell me anything about the car itself?
No. The identifier records when the mark was issued and nothing else. A private plate transferred onto an older car hides its age entirely, which is exactly what many of them are bought to do.
Are March and April 2025 cars taxed the same?
Not for their original first licences. The 25 identifier crosses 1 April 2025, when the new first-year schedule began. A petrol car at 131 to 150 g/km moved from £270 in March to £540 from April, while a zero emission car moved from £0 to £10. Later current annual licences use the £200 standard car rate, subject to an applicable supplement. Check the actual first registration day before comparing old invoices.
Does a March 2025 25 plate EV pay the expensive car supplement?
No. GOV.UK excludes zero emission cars first registered before 1 April 2025, so the March part of the 25 release falls on the exempt side. It still needs vehicle tax at the current £200 standard annual rate. Do not confuse a high original list price with liability for this particular pre-change electric cohort. Verify that the vehicle is classed as zero emission and that its first registration genuinely occurred in March.
What happens to an April 2025 EV priced at £50,000?
It paid the £10 zero emission first-year rate under the April 2025 rules. For a later licence effective from April 2026, the electric expensive car supplement threshold is a published list price of more than £50,000. At exactly £50,000 it does not cross that line and currently pays the £200 standard annual car rate. The rule works retrospectively for cars registered from April 2025; it does not depend on the used asking price today.
When does a 25 plate car first need an MOT in Great Britain?
The normal deadline is the third anniversary of the car's precise first registration date. A March 2025 car reaches it in March 2028; an August 2025 car reaches it in August 2028. Check the vehicle's official status rather than assigning every 25 plate the same day. If a previous keeper arranged a voluntary early test, the renewal pattern may have changed. Northern Ireland's normal first test for private cars is later, at four years.
Can I use the seller's tax until it expires?
No. Vehicle tax is not transferred to a buyer. When you become the keeper, take the green new keeper slip and tax the car before driving on the road, even if a seller paid for a full year. If the car will remain off road, make a SORN. The first-year tax shown in an old invoice belongs to the original registration event; your current payment follows the present standard rate and any supplement DVLA applies.
Could a 25 plate be assigned to my 2024 car?
No. A 25 age identifier would present a 2024 first registration as newer than it really is, which DVLA does not permit. Keep the personalised mark on its entitlement or retention document until you have an eligible receiving vehicle. The plate's ownership paperwork and the vehicle's own registration date are separate things. DVLA must record a completed assignment before you display the physical number plates.
