Plate age

The 74 plate

A 74 plate is a Great Britain age identifier issued by DVLA from 1 September 2024 to 28 February 2025. It dates the registration mark, so a transferred private plate does not prove when the vehicle was first registered. The tax and emissions results below are derived from that period using the 2026/27 tax rates.

What does a 74 number plate mean?

It is the age identifier for September 2024 to February 2025. Autumn series identifiers are the year plus 50, so 74 is 2024 plus 50 and covers September 2024 to February 2025.

The scheme changes twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September, which is why British new car sales have two enormous months and ten quiet ones.

Issuing regions for this age identifier

The age identifier says nothing about where the car came from. That is the memory tag, the two letters in front of it, and all 19 regions were issuing marks in this period.

Why does a 74 plate cover two calendar years?

DVLA released the 74 age identifier on 1 September 2024 and used it through 28 February 2025. Autumn marks add fifty to the year of their September launch, so the final winter registrations still carry 74. A car wearing 74 is therefore not necessarily a 2024 registration: one first registered in January or February 2025 carries it too. Read its first registration date on the V5C if the precise age matters for a warranty, a test booking or a finance comparison.

SMMT counted 275,239 UK new car registrations in September 2024. Battery electric cars accounted for 56,387 of them, a 20.5% share. That September result shows what dealers were selling at the plate change, not the propulsion of a particular used car. In the rest of this window, a manufacturer might have changed equipment, price or model year without changing the age identifier. The VIN, specification sheet and first registration record settle those questions.

In 2026, a car first registered in January or February gets 75, the autumn code from the year before. From 1 March it gets 26, and from 1 September it gets 76, which runs from September 2026 to February 2027.Age identifiers issued during 2026Last autumnSpring codeAutumn code752676JFMAMJJASOND1 March1 September75 covers September 2025 to February 2026

What tax rate applied to a new 74 plate car?

Every 74 plate registration fell within the 2024 to 2025 vehicle tax year, even though its later months fell in the next calendar year. New car first-year rates were set by CO2. The examples below are for petrol cars and diesels meeting RDE2; a diesel failing that emissions test could be charged at the next first-year band. Do not apply a current first-year table to a February 2025 registration, because the rate at the time of its first licence is what the original keeper paid.

A second or later annual licence is now normally £200 for a car from this post-2017 tax regime. A new keeper should check if an expensive car supplement is attached. For a 74 plate petrol, diesel or hybrid car whose published pre-discount list price exceeded £40,000, the current extra amount is £440 annually during the supplement's five-year run from the second licence, which for a first keeper began 12 months after registration, between September 2025 and February 2026. It is not calculated from the used price. A large depreciation since 2024 does not erase it.

The electric case is deliberately different: a zero emission 74 plate was first registered before 1 April 2025, so GOV.UK excludes it from the supplement. Its renewal still uses the £200 standard annual rate. For an ordinary 74 plate car, the standard amount applies regardless of whether its first-year CO2 entry was in a low or high band. Vans and motorcycles do not automatically share these car rates, although their marks can contain the same 74 digits.

A first-year payment was made only at first registration. The later rate excludes any expensive car supplement.

A February 2025 hybrid above the expensive car threshold

Registration
February 2025, 74 plate
Published new list price
More than £40,000
Current annual base and extra charge
£200 plus £440
  1. The date places its first licence in the 2024 to 2025 schedule, despite the 2025 calendar year.
  2. The list price crossed the £40,000 car threshold; its present used sale price is irrelevant.
  3. A later annual licence during the supplement period combines the two current amounts.

The current single annual payment is £640 while the supplement remains due; confirm the DVLA quote before purchase.

What is the first MOT date for a 74 plate?

A car first registered under 74 in Great Britain normally needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration. September 2024 registrations therefore first fall due in September 2027, while February 2025 registrations follow in February 2028. The gap is nearly a whole plate season. Do not plan a test simply from the number 74: take the day and month from the registration record and use the official MOT status checker when the car approaches the deadline.

Northern Ireland's first test for a private car or motorcycle is ordinarily at four years. For these registrations that means September 2028 through February 2029. A light goods vehicle there reaches its first test sooner, so a 74 plate van buyer should consult the goods vehicle rule rather than copy a private-car reminder. A move across the Irish Sea also warrants checking the current jurisdiction's record, because dates and booking systems do not become identical merely because the plate stays with the vehicle.

Before that first certificate exists, look at the car's service receipts and condition. No 74 plate reaches its third anniversary before September 2027, so an empty MOT history is normal at this check, but worn tyres or damaged lights still require attention. Once the first deadline passes without a test, GOV.UK says the car cannot be driven or parked on the road. Its only exceptions are a drive to a pre-arranged test or to or from a repair, not everyday trips while you wait for an appointment.

How do you check a 74 plate before paying for it?

Match the visible registration and VIN to the V5C. A private number might have replaced the car's original 74 mark, so the document's first registration field is more useful than a number plate photograph. Ask for the actual date, the original list price where a supplement could apply, and the CO2 entry if a seller quotes an old first-year rate. The first-year payment is historical and does not tell you the next keeper's bill.

The seller's tax is cancelled once DVLA is told of the sale, and GOV.UK says it does not pass to the buyer. Use the green new keeper slip to obtain your own licence before you drive away, or declare SORN if the vehicle will remain off the road. Confirm the insurer has the correct registration after any private plate change. Check the official MOT status service, even if a first test is not yet due, to make sure the date and vehicle identity agree with the advert.

  1. Obtain the full first registration date, not merely the 74 age identifier.
  2. Check vehicle tax and MOT records against the VIN and V5C.
  3. Ask whether a private mark is staying with the car before arranging insurance.
  4. Tax in your own name using the new keeper paperwork before collection by road.

Can a 74 registration go on an older car?

A 74 age mark would make a vehicle first registered before September 2024 look newer, so DVLA will not permit that assignment. A car first registered later may be eligible to carry it if the other transfer conditions are satisfied. The restriction attaches to the recipient's real first registration date. It also applies if the mark was bought at auction or held on a certificate.

If a seller has a cherished 74 mark, establish whether the sale includes the right to it. A V750 entitlement or V778 retention document shows the route for assigning a personalised registration. Complete the DVLA process before displaying replacement plates. When the mark is removed, tell your insurer and update any automatic payment account, such as the Dart Charge, since GOV.UK warns that a penalty charge can follow if you do not. A 74 badge alone is never a substitute for checking which mark DVLA currently assigns to the vehicle.

Common questions

What year is a 74 plate?
A 74 registration was issued September 2024 to February 2025, so the car behind it was first registered between 1 September 2024 and 28 February 2025. Most people call it a 2024 car.
How is a 74 plate car taxed?
First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate. That means £200 a year from the second licence, whatever it emits, plus the expensive car supplement if it listed above the threshold.
Is a 74 plate diesel ULEZ compliant?
No Euro figure is recorded, so we have read it from the first registration date of 1 September 2024. New cars had to meet Euro 6 from 1 September 2015. Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) asks Euro 6 of a diesel car, so there is nothing to pay.
Does the 74 tell me anything about the car itself?
No. The identifier records when the mark was issued and nothing else. A private plate transferred onto an older car hides its age entirely, which is exactly what many of them are bought to do.
Is a 74 plate a 2024 car or a 2025 car?
It can be either. The 74 release opened in September 2024 and closed at the end of February 2025. A vehicle registered in the autumn is a 2024 registration; one first registered in January or February belongs to 2025 by calendar date while retaining the 74 mark. Inspect the V5C registration date for an exact answer, particularly when comparing warranty start dates, MOT deadlines or two nearly identical adverts.
Do all 74 plate cars have the same road tax?
Their first-year payments differed by certified CO2, fuel and, for certain diesels, RDE2 status. Subsequent car licences share the current £200 standard annual single-payment rate, but a qualifying expensive car adds £440 during its supplement years. An electric 74 plate has no expensive car supplement because it was registered before the April 2025 dividing date. Its original first-year receipt is no guide now; DVLA's vehicle enquiry service shows the current tax rates when given the reference number from its V5C.
Was a new 74 plate electric car free to tax?
For its original first licence, yes: zero emission cars in the 2024 to 2025 schedule had a £0 first-year rate. That historical fact does not make today's renewal free. The existing electric car tax change came in during April 2025, and a 74 plate EV now has the standard £200 annual car rate. Its pre-change registration also keeps it outside the expensive car supplement, even if it had a high original list price.
When will a February 2025 74 plate need an MOT?
In Great Britain, a normally tested car reaches its first MOT on the third anniversary of its actual first registration, which places a February 2025 car in February 2028. Its 74 digits do not move that date back into 2027. Northern Ireland's normal private-car first test comes at four years, giving February 2029 for the same registration month. Verify the exact day and current record before booking.
Why can a September 2024 and February 2025 car have different values?
They share an identifier but may differ in mileage, warranty time left, equipment, condition and the date of their first MOT. The SMMT September launch figures describe the market then, not the valuation of each example. Ask for service evidence and the precise first registration date. A claimed model-year upgrade should be proved by the manufacturer's specification or VIN, not inferred from the 74 mark alone.
May I put my 74 private mark on a 2023 vehicle?
No. DVLA prohibits a transfer that makes the receiving vehicle look newer than it actually is. A 2023 first registration predates the September 2024 start of the 74 identifier. Keep the entitlement or retention document and choose an eligible later vehicle instead. Do not have plates made or alter their spacing in the hope of avoiding that rule; the assignment must appear on DVLA's record before the mark is displayed.
