Plate age

The 24 plate

A 24 plate is a Great Britain age identifier issued by DVLA from 1 March 2024 to 31 August 2024. It dates the registration mark, so a transferred private plate does not prove when the vehicle was first registered. The tax and emissions results below are derived from that period using the 2026/27 tax rates.

What does a 24 number plate mean?

It is the age identifier for March to August 2024. Spring series identifiers use the year itself, so 24 covers March to August 2024.

The scheme changes twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September, which is why British new car sales have two enormous months and ten quiet ones.

Issuing regions for this age identifier

The age identifier says nothing about where the car came from. That is the memory tag, the two letters in front of it, and all 19 regions were issuing marks in this period.

What changed when the 24 plate arrived in March 2024?

The 24 identifier belongs to registrations made from 1 March to 31 August 2024. It marks a spring release, not a manufacturing year. A car built earlier could have waited for sale or registration, while a privately transferred mark might conceal the original identifier altogether. Check the first registration date on the V5C before treating the plate as the vehicle's age. That date controls the first MOT and the tax rules that follow the car.

March was a large launch month. SMMT recorded 317,786 new car registrations in March 2024, with battery electric cars taking 15.2% of the market. Those are market totals, not a forecast for any individual 24 plate. A used buyer should still establish the actual fuel type, CO2 entry and original list price of the car being offered. The month tells you the registration cohort; it does not identify the specification, condition or tax bill.

In 2026, a car first registered in January or February gets 75, the autumn code from the year before. From 1 March it gets 26, and from 1 September it gets 76, which runs from September 2026 to February 2027.Age identifiers issued during 2026Last autumnSpring codeAutumn code752676JFMAMJJASOND1 March1 September75 covers September 2025 to February 2026

How much tax did a 24 plate car pay when new?

A 24 plate spans a tax-year change. A car registered in March 2024 took its first licence under the 2023 to 2024 schedule; an April to August registration used the 2024 to 2025 schedule. Both depended on certified CO2, with an extra first-year step for a diesel that did not meet RDE2. A zero emission car paid nothing for its first licence in either part of the window. The table shows selected petrol or RDE2 diesel bands, not a renewal quote. Check the precise first registration date before selecting its column.

From the second licence, a 24 plate car moves to the standard post-2017 system. The current annual single-payment standard rate is £200, including for electric cars first registered in this period. A qualifying petrol, diesel or hybrid car also pays the expensive car supplement in the second to sixth years after first registration, which for a 24 plate means licences starting before its sixth anniversary, between March and August 2030. The current supplement is £440, bringing a full annual single payment to £640. Qualification comes from the published list price when the car was new, above £40,000, before a dealer discount.

A 24 plate zero emission car is different. GOV.UK exempts zero emission cars registered before 1 April 2025 from that supplement, regardless of their original list price. It still needs a tax licence, and the current standard rate applies. Do not let a seller confuse an exemption from the supplement with exemption from all vehicle tax. A van or motorcycle carrying a similar identifier has its own tax class; the car figures here should not be applied to it.

Example

A 24 plate petrol car above the expensive car threshold

Original list price
More than £40,000
Current standard rate
£200
Current supplement
£440
  1. The new list price exceeded the £40,000 threshold, even if the first owner negotiated a discount.
  2. A licence during the supplement period adds £440 to the standard £200.
  3. Every 24 plate is still inside that period today, because none reaches its sixth anniversary before March 2030.

The current annual single-payment amount is £640 while the supplement applies, then the standard rate alone once that period ends.

When does a 24 plate car need its first MOT?

In Great Britain, a standard car first registered in this window reaches its first MOT deadline on the third anniversary of its actual registration date. That places 24 plate first tests between March and August 2027. The deadline is a day, not the end of the plate season: a car registered in March does not gain until August. Check the exact date through the official MOT status service and book an approved test centre before it arrives. A servicing appointment does not itself produce an MOT certificate.

Northern Ireland tests private cars and motorcycles when they reach four years, so a car remaining under that scheme ordinarily reaches its first test between March and August 2028. Light goods vehicles there follow a different first-test age. If a vehicle has moved between jurisdictions, consult its actual test record and local booking process rather than assuming the plate decides everything. The registration mark is only a prompt to investigate.

What should you check before buying a 24 plate used car?

Start with the V5C and compare its registration date, VIN and keeper details with the car. Ask for the original specification or invoice if the advertised tax cost assumes it escaped the expensive car threshold. The relevant price is the list price, including the specification at first registration, rather than today's asking price. Then use the government's vehicle tax check to see the vehicle record, and the MOT history service, which should show no test due before the third anniversary in 2027.

Tax does not pass from the seller to you. Once you become the keeper, use the green new keeper slip to tax the car before driving, even if the seller says their payment has months left. You may instead make a SORN while keeping it off public roads. If the seller is keeping a private number, GOV.UK says they must hold the V778 and the new log book before selling, and DVLA usually puts the car's original registration back on it. Insure the car under the mark shown on that new log book.

Check service and recall records alongside the registration age. Where a tax quotation looks high, ask whether it includes the supplement, which a 24 plate listed above £40,000 carries until 2030, and verify the original list price.

  1. Read the first registration date and VIN on the V5C, then compare both with the vehicle.
  2. Check tax and MOT status using the official services before agreeing the collection date.
  3. Obtain the green new keeper slip and tax the vehicle in your own name before driving.
  4. Record when the first MOT falls and book in good time if you will keep the car that long.

Can a 24 plate be put on another car?

DVLA will not let a transfer make the recipient vehicle appear younger than it is. A genuine car first registered before the 24 release cannot acquire a 24 age identifier to disguise its age. A later registered car may carry an older permissible mark if the transfer requirements are met. This is why a 24 plate on the road cannot prove the car itself was registered in 2024 without checking its record.

If a 24 mark is being sold on its own, the seller should hold a V750 certificate of entitlement or a V778 retention document. DVLA usually assigns a mark online straight away, so have the plates ready but fit them only once the assignment is made. A seller who intends to keep their mark should remove or retain it before sale, so the buyer receives the registration that will actually stay with the vehicle. The insurer must be told of a new mark, and GOV.UK says to update any Dart Charge, Congestion Charge or clean air zone account that pays by registration. Never rearrange characters or alter spacing to suggest a different year.

Common questions

What year is a 24 plate?
A 24 registration was issued March to August 2024, so the car behind it was first registered between 1 March 2024 and 31 August 2024. Most people call it a 2024 car.
How is a 24 plate car taxed?
First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate. That means £200 a year from the second licence, whatever it emits, plus the expensive car supplement if it listed above the threshold.
Is a 24 plate diesel ULEZ compliant?
No Euro figure is recorded, so we have read it from the first registration date of 1 March 2024. New cars had to meet Euro 6 from 1 September 2015. Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) asks Euro 6 of a diesel car, so there is nothing to pay.
Does the 24 tell me anything about the car itself?
No. The identifier records when the mark was issued and nothing else. A private plate transferred onto an older car hides its age entirely, which is exactly what many of them are bought to do.
Is a 24 plate from 2024 or 2025?
It is the March to August 2024 release. A car first registered in that window normally carries the 24 identifier, but a private number can replace it, and a car registered after August 2024 can be given a 24 mark. Use the V5C or DVLA vehicle enquiry to establish the actual first registration date. A showroom car manufactured in a previous year can still have a 24 mark if its first registration occurred in the spring or summer 2024 window.
Does a 24 plate electric car pay road tax now?
Yes. Its original zero emission first licence was free under the rates then in force, but the exemption ended for existing electric cars when the rules changed in April 2025. The current single annual standard rate is £200. Because this car was first registered before 1 April 2025, GOV.UK excludes it from the expensive car supplement even if its list price was high. The keeper still has to obtain a tax licence and cannot rely on the former owner's licence after buying it.
Will an expensive 24 plate EV incur the luxury tax supplement?
No, provided it is genuinely zero emission and was first registered in the 24 window. The published exemption covers zero emission vehicles first registered before 1 April 2025. The later increase of the electric supplement threshold to £50,000 applies to zero emission cars first registered from 1 April 2025; it does not turn a pre-change EV into a supplement payer. Check the DVLA record rather than inferring fuel from an advert, and budget for the normal £200 standard annual tax.
Can I buy a 24 plate car without an MOT certificate?
In Great Britain a normally tested car first registered in this period does not need its first MOT until the corresponding date in March to August 2027. That explains an empty MOT history before then. It does not guarantee the vehicle is roadworthy or serviced. Compare its registration date with today's date and arrange an inspection if you have doubts. Northern Ireland has a later first test for private cars, while a van can follow different rules.
Why is the advertised tax less than my renewal quote?
An advert may quote the £200 standard rate and omit the £440 expensive car supplement. For a 24 plate petrol, diesel or hybrid car that listed above £40,000, the extra charge applies to every licence after the first that starts before the car's sixth anniversary. A previous owner's discounted purchase price does not alter the published new list price. Ask the seller to show the current DVLA rate and confirm the original list price and any options fitted when it was first registered before committing to the car.
Can I move my 24 registration to an older vehicle?
You cannot assign it where doing so would make the recipient look newer than its actual first registration. A car registered before March 2024 therefore cannot use a 24 age mark simply because you own the entitlement. DVLA also requires the proper assignment documentation and an eligible vehicle. Keep the V750 or V778 safe, carry out the official transfer and update insurance and payment accounts after the new mark appears on the vehicle record.
