Plate age

The 76 plate

A 76 plate is a Great Britain age identifier issued by DVLA from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027. It dates the registration mark, so a transferred private plate does not prove when the vehicle was first registered. The tax and emissions results below are derived from that period using the 2026/27 tax rates.

What does a 76 number plate mean?

It is the age identifier for September 2026 to February 2027. Autumn series identifiers are the year plus 50, so 76 is 2026 plus 50 and covers September 2026 to February 2027.

The scheme changes twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September, which is why British new car sales have two enormous months and ten quiet ones.

Issuing regions for this age identifier

The age identifier says nothing about where the car came from. That is the memory tag, the two letters in front of it, and all 19 regions were issuing marks in this period.

When did the 76 plate become available?

The 76 age identifier opened on 1 September 2026 and is due to remain the current autumn issue through 28 February 2027. At this page's 26 September 2026 check, the season is still under way. A car already registered this month can legitimately display 76; a car merely ordered now might first be registered later in the same window. Use the date in the eventual V5C, because an order confirmation does not start the MOT clock or decide the first vehicle tax licence.

SMMT has scheduled its September 2026 new car registration release for 5 October. It has therefore not yet published the launch month's registration total or battery electric share as of this check. A seller's claim about record 76 plate demand or electric uptake should not be treated as an official figure now. The March 2026 release describes the earlier 26 launch, not this autumn's market, so it cannot fill the gap.

In 2026, a car first registered in January or February gets 75, the autumn code from the year before. From 1 March it gets 26, and from 1 September it gets 76, which runs from September 2026 to February 2027.Age identifiers issued during 2026Last autumnSpring codeAutumn code752676JFMAMJJASOND1 March1 September75 covers September 2025 to February 2026
The active 76 issue continues from autumn 2026 into February 2027.

What first-year car tax applies to a new 76 plate?

The entire 76 issue falls within the 2026 to 2027 vehicle tax year, so a new car first registered in this window uses that year's first-year table. Its certified CO2 determines the initial licence: a zero emission car is £10, a petrol car at 131 to 150 g/km is £560, and one at 151 to 170 g/km is £1,410. The table gives selected bands, not a quote for every engine. A diesel that does not meet RDE2 can face the higher neighbouring first-year band.

The first payment covers the car's initial licence only. A first keeper's second licence starts 12 months after registration, between September 2027 and February 2028, and today's single annual standard car rate is £200. If the published pre-registration list price of a petrol, diesel or hybrid car exceeded £40,000, the expensive car supplement adds £440 at today's rate during the five later years specified by GOV.UK. For a zero emission 76 car, the list-price line is instead more than £50,000. This electric threshold applies because every 76 registration is after 1 April 2025.

A car exactly at the electric £50,000 line is not above it; one priced above it can be caught even if a dealer discount reduces the amount paid. Options fitted before registration count towards the price, so check them and ask the dealer to confirm the tax quotation before the car is registered. The same 76 digits can also appear on a motorcycle or van, but their tax classes and first-year treatments are not established by the car figures here.

Selected first-year 2026 to 2027 car rates during the 76 release
Certified emissionsPetrol or RDE2 diesel first licenceCurrent later annual standard
Zero emission£10£200
111 to 130 g/km£455£200
131 to 150 g/km£560£200
151 to 170 g/km£1,410£200

The first-year rate is charged once. A qualifying expensive car supplement is added to later licences.

Example

A September 2026 electric car above the supplement threshold

First registration
September 2026, 76 plate
Published list price
More than £50,000
Initial zero emission licence
£10
  1. The initial tax uses the zero emission first-year row of the 2026 to 2027 schedule.
  2. Its original list price exceeds the £50,000 electric supplement threshold.
  3. On a qualifying later licence, the current £440 supplement sits above the £200 standard amount.

The first licence is £10; a current-rate later single annual licence during the supplement period would total £640.

When will a 76 plate have its first MOT?

A standard car in Great Britain reaches its first MOT deadline on the third anniversary of first registration. The opening 76 registrations in September 2026 therefore first fall due in September 2029, while a car first registered at the end of February 2027 reaches February 2030. This is a projected window, not a single expiry date. When a car has actually been registered, record its precise day and check the official MOT status before booking.

For a Northern Ireland private car or motorcycle the ordinary first test is at four years, giving September 2030 through February 2031 for this release. Light goods vehicles there are first tested at a different age. A buyer expecting to register a van, taxi or another special vehicle should identify its test category instead of copying the private-car timeline. A move between testing systems is another reason to check the live record when the date draws close.

What should you confirm before taking delivery of a 76 car?

Ask the supplying dealer for the certified CO2 figure, fuel classification and published list price of the chosen specification. Check whether factory options move the car across an expensive car threshold. An order form may show the projected first-year tax, but the registration date and vehicle details determine what is actually payable. If delivery slips into March 2027, it will no longer be a 76 first registration, though the 2026 to 2027 first-year table still applies until 31 March 2027.

Once DVLA registers the vehicle, compare the V5C's registration date and VIN with the car and your invoice. Confirm the tax licence is active before road use. If you are buying a nearly new demonstrator, the dealer is no longer registering a new car for you: the original first-year tax has already been paid, and your own vehicle tax is a fresh keeper licence. Tax does not pass between keepers, so use the green slip and the DVLA service at handover.

For an electric 76 car, establish its original published price even if you expect to sell it before the supplement years finish. A future buyer will also need that information to understand any supplement charge. If the dealer quotes only the £200 standard annual amount for a car above £50,000, ask for the full second-licence estimate. Do not read a launch-month sales statistic into an individual car's value while September's SMMT report remains unpublished.

  1. Get the CO2, fuel type and list price for the precise ordered specification.
  2. Check the registration date and assigned mark after DVLA completes registration.
  3. Match the VIN on the V5C, invoice and physical vehicle before acceptance.
  4. Confirm tax and insurance before driving, then note the individual MOT anniversary.

Can a 76 plate be transferred to an earlier car?

DVLA does not permit a registration assignment that makes the receiving vehicle seem newer. A car first registered under the preceding 26 spring series cannot take a 76 age mark, since 76 only began in September 2026. The same applies to any older first registration. A car first registered on or after 1 September 2026 may receive a personalised 76 mark under DVLA's normal assignment rules. The manufacturer's model year printed in a brochure does not change the car's legal first registration date.

Keep the V750 entitlement or V778 retention document when a 76 mark is being bought or held separately. Complete its assignment before fitting the physical plates. If the mark is later moved off your car, update the insurer and registration-based toll or clean air zone accounts when DVLA issues its replacement mark. The record, not a seller's photograph, shows which number currently belongs on the vehicle.

Common questions

What year is a 76 plate?
A 76 registration was issued September 2026 to February 2027, so the car behind it was first registered between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027. Most people call it a 2026 car.
How is a 76 plate car taxed?
First year rate by CO2, then a flat standard rate. That means £200 a year from the second licence, whatever it emits, plus the expensive car supplement if it listed above the threshold.
Is a 76 plate diesel ULEZ compliant?
No Euro figure is recorded, so we have read it from the first registration date of 1 September 2026. New cars had to meet Euro 6 from 1 September 2015. Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) asks Euro 6 of a diesel car, so there is nothing to pay.
Does the 76 tell me anything about the car itself?
No. The identifier records when the mark was issued and nothing else. A private plate transferred onto an older car hides its age entirely, which is exactly what many of them are bought to do.
Is a 76 plate available in September 2026?
Yes. The autumn identifier began on 1 September 2026 and covers first registrations through February 2027. A car ordered in September is not automatically registered then; delivery and registration may take place later. Inspect the V5C when the car is ready. The first registration date controls its future MOT deadline, and the legal mark on the vehicle should agree with DVLA's record.
How many 76 plate cars were registered in the launch month?
SMMT has not published its September 2026 release as of 26 September. Its press calendar schedules that information for 5 October. There is therefore no verified launch-month total or battery electric share to quote here yet. Figures from March 2026 concern the 26 plate and cannot stand in for the later autumn market. Check SMMT's September release once it appears before making a claim about the scale of 76 registrations.
What is the first-year tax on a 76 plate EV?
A zero emission car first registered in the 76 window uses the 2026 to 2027 first-year rate of £10. The current standard annual car rate after that is £200. If its published list price before first registration exceeds £50,000, the expensive car supplement can add £440 a year, at today's rate, for the relevant later years. Ask the dealer for the list price of the ordered specification, since a discounted transaction price does not settle the threshold test.
Will a January 2027 car still have a 76 plate?
An ordinary new registration in January 2027 falls inside the 76 issue window, which ends after February. Its calendar first registration year is 2027, despite the 76 digits referring to the autumn 2026 release. Future MOT timing follows the January 2027 registration day, rather than September 2026. Verify the date on the V5C and remember that a transferred private registration could replace the original age mark.
When does a September 2026 76 car need its MOT?
In Great Britain, the normal first MOT is due on the third anniversary of its September 2026 first registration, placing it in September 2029. Northern Ireland normally first tests a private car after four years, which places it in September 2030. The precise deadline follows the day shown on the vehicle record. Check the official status closer to the time, especially if the car is a van or has already been tested early.
May I assign my new 76 mark to a 26 plate car?
No. The 26 spring series began before the 76 autumn series. A 76 age identifier on a car first registered under 26 would make it appear newer than its real first registration, which DVLA bars. Keep the V750 or V778 until you choose a car first registered in September 2026 or later. Complete the assignment officially before fitting plates or changing your insurance registration.
