History
Opened 1966 with tolls charged from 1966 (GOV.UK 15 Sep 2017: first toll decrease 'since their introduction in 1966'). Transferred to public ownership under Highways England on 8 January 2018, when VAT was removed and tolls fell from £6.70/£13.40/£20.00 to £5.60/£11.20/£16.70 (Cat 1/2/3), the only reduction in their history. Tolls abolished 17 December 2018; the last paying driver crossed on Sunday 16 December 2018. Drivers were estimated to save around £365,000 per day (GOV.UK 17 Dec 2019). M48 HGV over 7.5t restriction imposed 27 May 2025.
