Windscreen chip repair

Do it early, because a chip that can be filled today may be a crack and a new screen next month. How serious it is depends on where it is. Damage more than 10mm across inside zone A, the 290mm wide strip centred on the steering wheel, is a major defect, as is damage more than 40mm across in the rest of the swept area.

What does windscreen chip repair cost in the UK?

£40 to £90 fitted at an independent garage, VAT included, on a mainstream car. The midpoint of that range is about £65, and where you land inside it is decided by access, parts and wheel size rather than by the garage's postcode.

Resin is injected into the chip under vacuum and cured, which stops the damage spreading and restores most of the clarity. Bumper put chip repair at £40 to £70 and National Windscreens publish single chip repair from £90, which is the range here. Three things decide whether it is a repair or a new screen. Size, because anything much larger than a £2 coin is usually beyond filling; position, since damage in the driver's line of sight is held to the tighter 10mm limit and a repair scar there can be a problem in itself; and whether the chip has already run into a crack, which puts you into replacement at £180 to £400, or up to about £1,000 on a screen with a heating element, a head up display or a camera behind it that needs recalibrating. Check your policy before you pay, because a lot of comprehensive cover includes chip repair with no excess and no effect on the no claims discount.

Common questions

How much does windscreen chip repair cost?
£40 to £90 fitted at an independent garage, including VAT, for a mainstream car.
How urgent is it?
Do it early, because a chip that can be filled today may be a crack and a new screen next month. How serious it is depends on where it is. Damage more than 10mm across inside zone A, the 290mm wide strip centred on the steering wheel, is a major defect, as is damage more than 40mm across in the rest of the swept area.
What moves the price within that range?
Access, parts and wheel size, mostly. A job that needs the bumper or an arch liner off costs an hour more than the same job on a car where it does not, and a genuine part can be several times an aftermarket one.
Is this price for one side or both?
The detail below says where a published price covers a pair. Where it does not, treat the range as one side and expect the second to add less than double, because the labour overlaps.
