Bristol started charging on 28 November 2022 and is the smaller of the two class D zones, so a private car that drives free through Bath or Sheffield pays £9 here. The council reported that more than 71 per cent of vehicles in the city already met the standard when the zone opened, which is why most drivers never see a charge. The common error is treating the zone as the whole city: it covers a small part of the centre, and one payment covers unlimited entries that day, so a delivery round inside the zone costs £9 rather than £9 a trip.

What should you check before driving into Bristol city centre?
Start with your destination, rather than assuming that every Bristol postcode is inside the charging area. The council calls it a small class D zone, drawn around the central area where air quality is worst. Many journeys across the wider city never enter it. The signed boundary matters more than a postcode or a sat nav's generic city-centre label. Use the council's zone map for the exact streets, then put your registration into the national vehicle checker. A private car can be charged here, unlike the class C schemes in several other English cities.
The charge runs midnight to midnight, with one payment covering repeated entries on that date. A journey crossing midnight can need two payments. Bristol allows payment from six days before to six days after travel and sends no arrival alert.

How much is a Bristol council parking ticket?
Bristol's fee schedule gives early-payment amounts of £35 for a higher-level parking PCN and £25 for a lower-level one. With the council's 50% discount, the full penalties are £70 and £50. The contravention code determines the level; read it on your notice.
A roadside ticket has a 14-day discount window; a postal notice has 21 days. An unpaid roadside PCN can lead to a Notice to Owner after 28 days. A later Charge Certificate adds 50%, and debt recovery can follow.
Appeal through Bristol's online form with the PCN number, which starts BS or OB, and the vehicle registration; the case details you can view online may include photographs. The amount is frozen while the council responds. After a formal rejection, the independent next stage is the Traffic Penalty Tribunal.

Where are Bristol's bus gates and camera restrictions?
Bristol's bus gates operate around the clock, but exemptions vary. Colston Avenue excludes ordinary cars, taxis and motorcycles. Baldwin Street at High Street allows taxis, motorcycles and heavy goods vehicles, yet still excludes private cars. Read each gate's own sign.
Bristol Bridge is a frequent routing trap. The council lists gates at High Street and Bristol Bridge, plus Victoria Street and Bristol Bridge. A sat nav can suggest the shortest line across the centre without recognising a bus-only connection. Look for the blue restriction sign before entering. If you miss a turn, continue along the permitted road and let the route recalculate. The Avonvale Road and Pile Marsh gates belong to the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial and are additional to the central gates.
Moving traffic cameras cover the banned turn at Hockeys Lane and the one-way restriction on Lower Redland Road. Ducie Road and The Avenue have exceptions for solo motorcycles, taxis and permit holders. At a new location, a first contravention in the first six months brings a warning notice, but that warning is not permission at another camera.

Which Bristol park and ride should you use?
Brislington is on the A4 Bath Road side of the city and Portway is on the A4 approach from the north-west. Service 9 links those sites through the centre. Long Ashton is the south-western choice, beside the A370 approach, and offers the m2 metrobus and service 505. Travelwest says parking at these sites is free for bus users. Its current service 9 adult fare is £2.60 single or £3.50 return, bought from the driver or in the Stagecoach app. Travelwest also says fares vary by site and bus service, so check the 505 or m2 fare before buying.
Brislington suits the Bath approach, Portway the north-west, and Long Ashton the A370. Park before crossing any zone boundary. All three sites are locked after closing and a car left inside faces a release fee, so check the last return bus; Travelwest gives 0117 903 8070 for a locked-in car.

The published travel cost is the £3.50 bus return. Free site parking does not create a Bristol Clean Air Zone payment.
How do Bristol residents and visitors use permit bays?
Residents' schemes include Clifton East, Bedminster East and Spike Island, and each scheme sets its own hours, shown on its signs. The council warns that a valid residents' or visitors' permit does not prevent a PCN on double yellow lines.
Visitor permits are digital in the residents' schemes. The resident obtains them through MiPermit and activates one for the visitor's registration and date. The council says one activation covers one vehicle for one day during that scheme's hours. You can set it up in advance and cancel before the session starts if plans change. A resident does not need to own a car to obtain visitor permits, but must show eligibility for the address. Some newer car-free or low-car developments cannot obtain them, and Central Parking Zone households cannot use this visitor product.
The 2026 to 2027 schedule lists visitor permits at £2 each, or £2.50 in Clifton Village, Clifton East and Kingsdown. Paid RPS bays cost £2 an hour, or £2.50 in those areas. Without a permit, a visitor can take a free 30-minute pay and display ticket or pay for up to three hours, and the bay sign shows where a longer stay is allowed. Visitor permits expire a year after purchase, and unused paid ones are not refunded.
Where can you park and charge an electric car in Bristol?
Revive runs the charge points in Bristol City Council car parks, and you sign up to its network to use them. The council says parking charges still apply while you charge, so the Revive payment does not cover the stay.
The council also lists Revive at College Street, Temple Gate, West End and The Grove, plus the Brislington, Portway and Long Ashton park and ride sites. Check availability before relying on a particular bay.

The table distinguishes those districts from the whole BS postcode area, so a wider area figure should not be presented as a count of city-centre garages. It also separates classes. A normal car usually needs a class 4 test, while motorcycles and larger passenger vehicles have other classes. Check the class a garage is authorised to test before booking, then confirm its appointment and price directly.

- Travelwest says the parking is free for bus users. You pay for the bus journey, with a current adult return of £3.50 on service 9. Brislington is on the A4 Bath Road approach, making it useful when you come from that side of Bristol. Check the return timetable before leaving the car, because the site is not simply an unrestricted overnight car park. If you arrive in a chargeable vehicle but park outside the Clean Air Zone and then take the bus, that parked vehicle has not made a journey through the charging area.
- What happens if I miss a Bristol parking PCN discount?
- The council normally offers half price for a prompt payment. A ticket attached to the vehicle has a 14-day discounted window; a postal notice has 21 days. After that, the full higher or lower amount is due. For an unpaid roadside PCN, Bristol says a Notice to Owner may follow after 28 days, with a chance to pay or make formal representations. Further non-payment can add a Charge Certificate and eventually debt recovery. If you dispute the allegation, use the council's written appeal route promptly and retain evidence of submission.
