History

Opened 1911; Grade II* listed; three spans with a 174m main river span carrying a gondola for vehicles and pedestrians between the A178 Port Clarence and Middlesbrough; was the world's longest working transporter bridge. Closed and cordoned off from 5 August 2019 on safety grounds after inspections found over-stressed elements. The council's December 2020 report costed options from £655,000 (make safe, visitor use only) up to £2.335m to £4.335m capital plus about £3.0m of ten-year maintenance to reopen it for vehicles and pedestrians, and noted £377k already committed to make the bridge safe. In November 2023 the Tees Valley Mayor pledged to fund repairs from the £1bn post-HS2 transport settlement. No reopening date published.
