Assumptions

Caveats

  • These monthly, yearly and saving figures are calculations from the published per-crossing price, not figures published by the operator.
  • The council site sits behind an Incapsula challenge, so pages were rendered in a headless browser; all figures were read from the live council page and the Toll Order PDF. The Order's Schedule 2 columns were partly scrambled in text extraction; the council web page's stated concessions were used where the two overlap.

How and when to pay

  • Pay at the booth when crossing. If you cannot pay, take a deferred payment slip: 7 days to pay the toll plus a £2 admin fee (by phone 023 8043 1040). Driving through without paying leads to an invoice from the council.
  • Cash at the booth (10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2 coins only, no change given); contactless card; SmartCities pre-paid card (topped up online); deferred payment slip.

Penalty for late or missed payment

No penalty charge notice scheme is published. Deferred payment adds a £2 admin fee within 7 days; non-payment is pursued by invoice via the Itchen Bridge office (itchen.bridge@southampton.gov.uk).

Discounts

  • Southampton residents (council tax payers, SO14 to SO19): Class 2 concession 40p with SmartCities card
  • Local residents of the Concessionary Zone (Woolston/Sholing area defined in Schedule 3 of the Order): concessions on Classes 2 to 4 (Class 3 60p, Class 4 £3 per the Order)
  • Local commercial concerns in the Concessionary Zone: Class 3 60p, Class 4 £3 with a per-vehicle SmartCities card
  • Southampton City Council registered taxis: Class 3 at £1.20
  • No charge on Christmas Day

Exemptions

  • Class 1 motorcycles and three-wheelers free
  • Disabled persons concession card holders (Class 2) free
  • Police, fire and ambulance vehicles on emergency calls (Article 9 of the Order)
  • Military vehicles (Article 9)
  • Electric vehicles: no exemption listed on the current toll page

History

Opened 1977, tolled under the Hampshire Act 1983 to manage congestion and fund maintenance. Contactless accepted at booths. The 2025 Toll Order (effective 7 April 2025) revoked the 2023 (No.2) Order; Class 2 standard toll is now £1.20 and Class 4 £40.
