History
Built April 1967 to July 1971 for £10.5m and opened by Princess Anne on 2 July 1971; once the world's longest cable-stayed bridge (1.3km), now carrying over 35,000 vehicles a day (Transport Scotland, 1 Jul 2021). Tolls were charged from opening; the original 20-year toll period expired 2 July 1991 and an administrative error meant tolls were collected without authority after 2 July 2001, corrected retrospectively by the Erskine Bridge Tolls Act 2001 (Royal Assent 13 Sep 2001); toll income was £5 million in 2000-01. Tolling was suspended from 1 April 2006 and the power to toll ceased on 2 July 2006.
