History
Built from the late 1960s, opened to traffic in 1975 (council marked 50 years on 25 March 2025). Tolls were charged each way for around 44 years; maintenance was entirely funded from toll revenue. Welsh Government announced abolition in October 2017 (budget agreement with Plaid Cymru) and offered £3m per year to replace lost revenue plus one-off payments for removing toll infrastructure and staff redundancies (GOV.WALES 6 Dec 2018 and 12 Mar 2019). Last toll paid 28 March 2019; maintenance now mainly funded by an annual Welsh Government grant.
