Clutch
Checked on 1 August 2025.RAC, Clutch replacement cost: how much will you pay? (as of 1 August 2025)
What does clutch cost in the UK?
£250 to £1,000 fitted at an independent garage, VAT included, on a mainstream car. The midpoint of that range is about £625, and where you land inside it is decided by access, parts and wheel size rather than by the garage's postcode.
The gearbox has to come away from the engine, which is most of the work, then the driven plate, cover and release bearing are replaced and the box goes back on. ClickMechanic put the job at £400 on average within £250 to £600, around four hours and anything from three to more than eight. The RAC quote an average of £670 with a £500 to £1,000 range, from £603 on a Toyota or a BMW to £899 on a Renault, and this range spans both. Three things decide where you land. Whether the car is front or rear wheel drive and how much has to come off to drop the box; whether it has a dual mass flywheel, which is a large extra part and is usually replaced with the clutch because it is already off the car; and whether the release system is a concentric slave cylinder inside the bellhousing, which is worth replacing while you are in there rather than paying the same labour twice.

Common questions
- How much does clutch cost?
- £250 to £1,000 fitted at an independent garage, including VAT, for a mainstream car.
- How urgent is it?
- Nothing on a roadworthiness inspection looks at a clutch, so this one is entirely on you. It is on this list because it is one of the biggest bills a used car can hand you and because a clutch that is slipping or juddering is telling you it has months rather than years left. Once it will not take drive at all you are paying for recovery as well.
- What moves the price within that range?
- Access, parts and wheel size, mostly. A job that needs the bumper or an arch liner off costs an hour more than the same job on a car where it does not, and a genuine part can be several times an aftermarket one.
- Is this price for one side or both?
- Treat the range as the job as the source published it. Where a part is replaced in pairs the detail below says so, and the second side adds less than double because the labour overlaps.
