Car battery

Not a safety defect on its own, but it will strand you. A battery that is insecure and likely to fall from its carrier or cause a short circuit is a major defect, and so is a battery that is leaking. Most batteries fail on the first cold morning after a mild autumn.

Checked on 30 July 2026.ClickMechanic, Car battery replacement cost guide (as of 30 July 2026)

What does car battery cost in the UK?

£30 to £300 fitted at an independent garage, VAT included, on a mainstream car. The midpoint of that range is about £165, and where you land inside it is decided by access, parts and wheel size rather than by the garage's postcode.

The old battery comes out, the new one goes in and is clamped down, and on newer cars it is registered to the charging system so the alternator charges it correctly. Halfords fit batteries from £30 including fitting at the small end. ClickMechanic put a garage replacement at £130 on average within £100 to £300, at thirty to sixty minutes. A franchised network publishes £169 for a conventional battery and £239 for a stop start one with genuine parts, up to £339 on newer models. Three things set the price. Capacity and cold cranking amps, since a diesel with a big starter needs more of both; whether the car has stop start, which needs an AGM or EFB battery at around 20 per cent more; and whether the battery has to be coded, because skipping that on a car that expects it will shorten the life of the new one. On some cars the battery lives under a seat or in the boot, which adds time.

Common questions

How much does car battery cost?
£30 to £300 fitted at an independent garage, including VAT, for a mainstream car. A franchised dealer publishes £169 to £339 for the same work.
How urgent is it?
Not a safety defect on its own, but it will strand you. A battery that is insecure and likely to fall from its carrier or cause a short circuit is a major defect, and so is a battery that is leaking. Most batteries fail on the first cold morning after a mild autumn.
What moves the price within that range?
Access, parts and wheel size, mostly. A job that needs the bumper or an arch liner off costs an hour more than the same job on a car where it does not, and a genuine part can be several times an aftermarket one.
Is this price for one side or both?
Treat the range as the job as the source published it. Where a part is replaced in pairs the detail below says so, and the second side adds less than double because the labour overlaps.
