The zone opened on 30 January 2023 for taxis, buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles, with vans added in July 2023. It is the only English zone where the bridges are the story: the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges are all inside it, so a Gateshead driver crossing into Newcastle is charged before reaching the city centre. Taxis and vans pay £12.50, the same figure as the London ULEZ and on the same Euro 6 diesel standard, so a van that clears the ULEZ will normally clear this zone too.

What should you check before crossing into Newcastle?
First decide which Tyne crossing your route uses. The Tyneside class C zone covers the centre and central bridges. Private cars and motorcycles are outside its charge; affected taxis, vans and larger vehicles need a registration check.

How does Newcastle's Clean Air Zone affect vans and taxis?
BREATHE charges a non-compliant taxi or light goods vehicle £12.50 daily and a larger bus, coach or lorry £50. A taxi remains in its vehicle class during a private errand. For a rental or lease, establish who pays before entry.
The daily period ends at midnight. Use the government service before travel or within six days after it. A GoCardless business account allows grouped payments but still requires each journey to be authorised. Eligible taxis licensed in Newcastle, Gateshead or North Tyneside can buy seven consecutive days for £50. Vans cannot use that licence.
A motorhome may qualify for an exemption on application; a horse box does not qualify for that particular relief. Wait for approval before relying on an exemption. The charge is waived on a designated diversion route for planned works, and after an unplanned diversion the enforcement team has been told about. Leaving a charge unpaid past the six days brings a £120 penalty charge notice, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

How much is a Newcastle council parking or bus lane PCN?
A bus lane PCN is £70, or £35 within 21 days. Bus notices begin LK; parking notices begin NU. Service is deemed two working days after posting. Check when your payment reaches the council, and retain its confirmation.
Challenge through the council using the notice reference and evidence. A formal parking rejection gives access to the Traffic Penalty Tribunal. If neither payment nor tribunal appeal follows within 28 days, a Charge Certificate adds 50%. An Order for Recovery offers a witness statement route for specified procedural failures such as a missing Notice to Owner.

Which Newcastle junctions and bridge roads need extra care?
The Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges lie inside the Clean Air Zone. An affected van or taxi can be charged before reaching its final city-centre stop. The A19 Tyne Tunnels follow a different corridor and collect a separate toll.
The yellow box at Christon Road and Great North Road has been camera enforced since October 2025. Blocking it can bring a £70 PCN, or £35 with early payment. Christon Road at Hyde Terrace has had a separate no-entry camera since 1 July 2026, with warning notices for a first offence during its first six months. Check the exit before entering a box.

Where should you park to use the Metro into Newcastle?
Metro park and ride car parks include Four Lane Ends, Regent Centre, Bank Foot and Callerton Parkway. Parking is £1.80 during the published Monday to Saturday charging hours and free on Sundays. Buy the Metro ticket separately.
From the north, Four Lane Ends or Regent Centre can intercept the drive before central restrictions. Bank Foot suits another approach. Use the PayByPhone location code on the car park sign, or display a pay-and-display ticket. Travel North East permits free Blue Badge parking with the badge displayed, subject to signs.

How do Newcastle residents arrange parking for visitors?
A Newcastle resident permit is virtual and tied to an eligible address and zone. The first standard-vehicle permit costs £35 and the second £90; qualifying low-emission vehicles cost less and fully electric vehicles are free. Provide address evidence and a taxed, MOT-tested vehicle. The permit covers signed bays within its own zone.
The council's visitor permit is a different product. An eligible household can obtain one visitor permit, costing £35 under the published tariff, and up to 60 half day or full day scratchcards in a rolling year for times when more than one vehicle visits at once. The host, not the arriving driver, applies and supplies address evidence. The visitor permit is now virtual, so the host must add the visitor's registration to it for the whole visit; the account can save up to 10 vehicles. The council's separate City Centre Resident Permit applies within the central Controlled Parking Zone and can cover designated paid spaces and council car parks under its own rules; a suburban permit should not be treated as interchangeable.
Newcastle suggests applying 14 days before a permit is needed. Payment follows approval. For a courtesy car, contact Parking Services to update the registration; the old virtual permit may not cover it.
Where can you charge an electric car in Newcastle?
Newcastle City Council says EV Smart manages its public points. The app shows locations, instructions and a route to report faults. Use the council's charging map to check a live point and its tariff before travelling. A charger near your destination may belong to another operator at a supermarket or private car park.
What does the Tyne Tunnel cost on a visit to Newcastle?
For a one-off visit, TT2's guest payment lets you buy a passage in advance or pay by midnight the day after travel. The operator also accepts payment through its app, automated phone line and PayPoint retailers. There is no cash booth at the tunnel mouth. Keep the confirmation, including the registration, because a payment against the wrong plate will not reliably cover the journey. For regular users, a prepaid account with automatic top-up can reduce the chance of an unpaid passage, provided sufficient credit is available.
A payment after TT2's deadline goes towards a future passage rather than the one already made, and the registered keeper still receives an Unpaid Toll Charge Notice. That notice costs £60 plus the toll, cut to £30 plus the toll if paid within 14 days, and rises to £100 plus the toll if unpaid after 28 days. Save the receipt and contact TT2 about any disputed plate or passage.
