Tesla Model Y
What our record holds on the Model Y, sold in the UK since 2021: body styles, fuel types and the road tax a used one pays.
No reliability figure is published for the Tesla Model Y that this site could cite. What circulates instead is survey data from panels that select themselves, and warranty claim rates published by companies with something to sell.
Any percentage would be our own calculation. Which years count, and whether a facelift and a new generation sharing the Model Y name are one model or two, both move the answer, and neither choice is anybody official's.
So the field does not exist. We do not average the other Tesla models into a number and put it here, and we do not push a marque figure down onto the Model Y. What is real and specific is the paperwork for one car.
No fault ordering is published for the Model Y
A 2022 Model Y pays the standard rate, £200 a year in 2026/27.
That figure is a worked example for the year and engine named, not a rate for every Model Y. Read the CO2 figure and the first registration date off the V5C before you budget, because both change the answer.

Buying a used Model Y: what the record settles
Our record puts the Model Y's UK sales period at since 2021. That range is the useful starting point, because everything about the cost of running one turns on where a particular example sits inside it. It came in one body style here, SUV, with one fuel type, electric.
Every Model Y on the road was first registered on or after 1 April 2017, which makes the tax simple: a flat standard rate from the second licence onwards, whatever the car emits. Where the list price was over the threshold when it was new, the expensive car supplement is charged on top for five years from that second licence. It attaches to the car rather than the owner, so a used one arrives with whatever is left of it still to pay, and the seller has no reason to mention that.
For running costs the fuel matters more than the badge. An electric one takes the same test minus the emissions section. Everything else is identical, so tyres, brakes, suspension, steering and lighting are inspected exactly as they are on a petrol car. Four wheel drive versions carry more driveline than the two wheel drive ones. Driveshaft boots, propshaft joints and the extra bushes are all inspected, and they are the items that turn a cheap purchase into an expensive first year.
None of that is a substitute for the record of the actual car. The invoices name what was replaced, when and at what mileage, and the same job appearing twice in three years says more about a Model Y than any statistic about the model ever could. A mileage that goes backwards across a paperwork trail is worth walking away from whatever the badge is.
Tesla began UK deliveries of the Model S in 2014 and the Model 3 in 2019, and the Model Y has since become one of the ten best selling new cars here. It sells directly rather than through franchised dealers, so servicing and body repair go through its own network or approved shops. Suspension bushes, control arms and the 12 volt battery are the items that recur on higher mileage used cars. That is context on the marque rather than on this car, and there is more of it, along with every other model line, on the Tesla page.
